The Double Reed

Unlike clarinets or saxophones which use a single reed pressed against a mouthpiece, the oboe relies entirely on a double reed. This mechanism is notoriously difficult to master. It demands immense air pressure but permits very little air volume to escape through the tiny opening. The internal shape of the oboe is conical — expanding gradually from the reed down to the bell. This conical bore is acoustically crucial. Why the Oboe — and Only the Oboe — Tunes the Orchestra

Before the conductor raises their baton, before the audience fully settles, the concertmaster (the principal violinist) stands and signals to the woodwind section. Out of the silence, a single, unwavering note cuts through the hall: a Concert A at exactly 440 Hz. It is always played by the principal oboist. Every other instrument in the orchestra must tune their strings, slide their brass tubing, or adjust their mouthpieces to match this single oboe note. But why?

The tradition traces back to the 18th century. In early Baroque orchestras, the harpsichord or organ was the foundational instrument and dictated the pitch. As orchestras grew larger and moved away from the harpsichord, the oboe took over the tuning responsibility because its bright, piercing timbre—rich in penetrating upper harmonics—could be heard clearly over the chaos of dozens of musicians warming up.

However, the real reason is a matter of mechanical inflexibility: the oboe essentially cannot be tuned. While a violinist can simply tighten a peg, and a flautist can pull their headjoint out a fraction of an inch, the oboist has virtually no mechanical way to quickly alter the fundamental pitch of their instrument. The oboe's pitch is determined almost entirely by the length of the reed the player has spent hours hand-carving that morning. The fundamental material is Arundo donax, a tall, bamboo-like cane grown primarily in the Mediterranean basin. To produce a sound, this tough woody material must be shaved down to a vibrating tip measuring barely 0.6 millimetres in thickness.

Why don't professionals just buy reeds from a shop? Because the microscopic variations in a reed dictate the instrument's entire tone, intonation, and resistance. A reed must be perfectly calibrated to match the player's unique facial anatomy (embouchure), their specific brand of oboe, and the acoustics of the hall they are playing in. Furthermore, cane is an organic material that reacts violently to changes in temperature, humidity, and altitude. A reed that plays beautifully in a damp coastal city might clamp shut entirely if taken to a dry, high-altitude location.

The most cited explanation is French: the name may derive from 'cor anglé' — meaning 'angled horn' — because early versions had a bent or angled body shape. Over time, 'anglé' (angled) became confused with 'anglais' (English).

A second theory points to German: 'engellisches Horn' meaning 'angelic horn' — a reference to the instrument's sweet, ethereal tone. This may have been corrupted into 'English Horn' via mistranslation.

A third possibility: Italian 'corno anglato' (angled horn) — same idea, different language of origin.

What is known: the instrument originated in Central Europe — likely Silesia or Vienna — around the 1720s, and appeared in Viennese musical scores before it was common in France. The 'English' label was applied by people who were not English and to an instrument that had nothing to do with England. It has remained unexplained ever since.
