The heckelphone and bass oboe are both pitched an octave below the standard oboe but differ significantly in bore width and sound character. Very few if any new heckelphones are currently being made — production has been extremely limited in recent decades due to the complexity of the instrument's wide bore and wood requirements.
The Oboe — Ancient, Melancholy and Unmistakeable
The Origin
The oboe traces its bloodline back to the raucous medieval shawm — a loud, outdoor instrument favoured for military use and village dancing. In the mid-17th century, musicians in the French court of Louis XIV wanted a refined, indoor instrument that could sing with the nuance of the human voice. The resulting instrument, crafted by the Hotteterre and Philidor families, was named the hautbois (literally "high wood"). With a narrower bore and refined key mechanisms, it immediately became the melodic backbone of the Baroque orchestra.
The Double Reed
Unlike clarinets or saxophones which use a single reed pressed against a mouthpiece, the oboe relies entirely on a double reed. Two thin pieces of Arundo donax cane are bound precisely together and placed directly into the player's mouth. Sound is generated when these two blades vibrate against one another.
This mechanism is notoriously difficult to master. It demands immense air pressure but permits very little air volume to escape through the tiny opening. Oboists are engaged in a constant physical battle; the joke in orchestral circles is that an oboe player will often run out of oxygen before they ever run out of breath.
The Conical Bore
The internal shape of the oboe is conical — expanding gradually from the reed down to the bell. This conical bore is acoustically crucial. It allows the instrument to overblow at the true octave (making the fingerings logical) and ensures it produces a complete, rich series of harmonics. It is this specific harmonic density that gives the oboe its complex, penetrating quality, allowing it to cut clearly through the thickest orchestral textures.
The Range and Repertoire
The standard oboe is a non-transposing instrument pitched in C, with a range of roughly two and a half octaves. Its repertoire is vast and distinguished. From the intricate, weaving counterpoint of J.S. Bach to Mozart's lively concertos, right through to Ennio Morricone's haunting solos in The Mission, the oboe is trusted with music's most exposed melodic lines. When a composer needs a deeper, more mournful voice, they turn to its larger sibling, the cor anglais (English horn) — famously heard in the Largo movement of Dvořák's New World Symphony.
The Timbre and Its Reputation
Comedian Danny Kaye once famously described the oboe as "an ill wind that nobody blows good." While it is true that a poorly played oboe resembles the cry of an injured duck, in the hands of a master, it is arguably the most evocative and expressive instrument in the woodwind family. Its piercing clarity is so dependable that the principal oboist is assigned the vital task of playing the concert 'A' — the single note to which the entire symphony orchestra must tune before a performance begins.
Why the Oboe — and Only the Oboe — Tunes the Orchestra
Before the conductor raises their baton, before the audience fully settles, the concertmaster (the principal violinist) stands and signals to the woodwind section. Out of the silence, a single, unwavering note cuts through the hall: a Concert A at exactly 440 Hz. It is always played by the principal oboist. Every other instrument in the orchestra must tune their strings, slide their brass tubing, or adjust their mouthpieces to match this single oboe note. But why?
The tradition traces back to the 18th century. In early Baroque orchestras, the harpsichord or organ was the foundational instrument and dictated the pitch. As orchestras grew larger and moved away from the harpsichord, the oboe took over the tuning responsibility because its bright, piercing timbre—rich in penetrating upper harmonics—could be heard clearly over the chaos of dozens of musicians warming up.
However, the real reason is a matter of mechanical inflexibility: the oboe essentially cannot be tuned. While a violinist can simply tighten a peg, and a flautist can pull their headjoint out a fraction of an inch, the oboist has virtually no mechanical way to quickly alter the fundamental pitch of their instrument. The oboe's pitch is determined almost entirely by the length of the reed the player has spent hours hand-carving that morning. Because the oboe cannot bend to the orchestra, the orchestra must bend to the oboe.
There is only one exception to this rule in the classical canon. If a piano is featured in the concerto, the orchestra will tune to the piano instead, because a piano takes a professional technician hours to retune. If there is no piano, and the specific piece of music contains no oboe parts at all, the principal clarinet will step in to provide the Concert A.
The Hidden Labour — Making an Oboe Reed
Professional oboists spend as much time making reeds as playing music. No other orchestral instrument requires players to manufacture their own tools.
The relationship between an oboist and their reed is one of profound codependence and frequent betrayal. The fundamental material is Arundo donax, a tall, bamboo-like cane grown primarily in the Mediterranean basin. To produce a sound, this tough woody material must be shaved down to a vibrating tip measuring barely 0.6 millimetres in thickness.
Why don't professionals just buy reeds from a shop? Because the microscopic variations in a reed dictate the instrument's entire tone, intonation, and resistance. A reed must be perfectly calibrated to match the player's unique facial anatomy (embouchure), their specific brand of oboe, and the acoustics of the hall they are playing in. Furthermore, cane is an organic material that reacts violently to changes in temperature, humidity, and altitude. A reed that plays beautifully in a damp coastal city might clamp shut entirely if taken to a dry, high-altitude location.
Because the microscopic tip degrades rapidly with moisture and vibration, a great reed may only survive between 10 minutes and 1 week of heavy playing. As a result, professional players arrive at concerts with boxes holding four to six finished, tested reeds. Before stepping on stage, they "crow" them (blowing into the reed alone to test its harmonic output) and often make panicked, last-minute scrapes with a razor-sharp knife just seconds before the curtain rises.

Invented in 1904 by Wilhelm Heckel (at the urging of Richard Wagner, who wanted a "baritone oboe" for his massive orchestral works), the heckelphone is one of the most enigmatic instruments ever created. It shares the pitch of a bass oboe but features a vastly wider bore, giving it a heavy, aggressive, and dark sonority that cuts through thick orchestration.

Why Is It Called the English Horn When It's Not English and Not a Horn?
The cor anglais (pronounced 'core ong-GLAY') translates from French as 'English horn.' It is neither English in origin nor a horn. It is a woodwind instrument that originated in Central Europe — likely Silesia or Vienna — around the 1720s, and appeared in Viennese musical scores before it was common in France.
Three theories compete — and none is fully proven.
The most cited explanation is French: the name may derive from 'cor anglé' — meaning 'angled horn' — because early versions had a bent or angled body shape. Over time, 'anglé' (angled) became confused with 'anglais' (English).
A second theory points to German: 'engellisches Horn' meaning 'angelic horn' — a reference to the instrument's sweet, ethereal tone. This may have been corrupted into 'English Horn' via mistranslation.
A third possibility: Italian 'corno anglato' (angled horn) — same idea, different language of origin.
What is known: the instrument originated in Central Europe — likely Silesia or Vienna — around the 1720s, and appeared in Viennese musical scores before it was common in France. The 'English' label was applied by people who were not English and to an instrument that had nothing to do with England. It has remained unexplained ever since.

The principal (first) oboist holds one of the most critical leadership roles on stage.
