How Many Continents Are There?
Seven. That is the answer most of the English-speaking world learns in primary school, and it is the answer this page will give you too. It is also, as you are about to find out, not really an answer at all.

The number you learned is a local custom
Here is the first crack in “seven.” It is not what the whole world is taught. In much of Europe, and across Latin America, schoolchildren learn that there are six continents — and not the same six as each other. Many European countries teach a six-continent model that merges North and South America into a single continent simply called America. Much of the Spanish-speaking world does the same. Meanwhile other traditions merge Europe and Asia instead, into a single landmass called Eurasia, and also arrive at six — a completely different six.
So a child in Madrid, a child in Moscow and a child in Chicago can all be told they have learned “the continents,” all be marked correct, and all disagree. Some models go lower still: combine the Americas and Eurasia and you can argue your way down to as few as four or five. The count is not wrong in any of these places. It is just local.
So who is in charge of the definition?
If geographers disagree, surely there is some authority that settles it — the way the United Nations effectively anchors the count of countries at 193 members. A committee, a treaty, an international standards body. Something.
There is nothing. This is the part that genuinely surprises people: there is no official body that defines what a continent is or how many exist. No vote was ever taken. The word “continent” has no agreed scientific definition at all. It is a convention — an old habit of language — that hardened into something that merely feels like a fact because we all learned it young, with the same confident tone teachers use for things that are actually settled.
You can feel the gap if you try to write the definition yourself. “A very large landmass”? How large — and then why is Australia, at about 7.7 million square kilometres, a continent while Greenland, at 2.2 million, is merely an island? “Separated by ocean”? Then why are Europe and Asia, with no ocean between them anywhere, two continents instead of one? Every rule you reach for is broken by an example you already accept. The definition does not exist because it cannot be written without contradicting the list it is supposed to produce.
Europe is the exception that gives the game away
Of all seven, one is almost impossible to defend on geography alone — and it is the one a great many readers of this page live on. Europe is not a separate landmass. It is the western end of a single enormous slab of rock that runs unbroken to the Pacific. By the test we apply everywhere else — surrounded, or nearly surrounded, by water — Europe and Asia are obviously one continent, the one geologists simply call Eurasia.
Why, then, is Europe its own continent? For reasons that have nothing to do with the land. The division is old, cultural and political: the ancient Greeks drew a line between the world they knew and the world to the east, and Europe’s later economic and imperial power kept that line on the map long after anyone could justify it physically. The border between the two — running down the Ural Mountains and the Caucasus — is itself an invention, a route somebody proposed in the eighteenth century. One America, or two?
Turn to the other side of the world and the same problem appears with the opposite answer. North and South America are joined — physically connected by the thin bridge of land running through Panama. There is no ocean between them. By the strict water-boundary rule, they are as much one continent as Europe and Asia are.
And yet much of the English-speaking world counts them as two, while much of Latin America counts them as one. Notice the contradiction sitting inside the standard seven-continent model: it splits the Americas, which are joined, and also splits Europe from Asia, which are joined — using opposite logic for the two cases. A consistent rule cannot produce the list of seven. The list came first; the rules were reverse-engineered afterwards, and imperfectly. Each continent page on this site — from North America to South America — is, in a sense, a page about a decision rather than a place.
What the Earth itself is divided into
If the seven continents are a cultural list, is there a real division of the planet underneath it? There is — and it does not match. The Earth’s rigid outer shell is broken into tectonic plates: vast pieces of crust that drift, collide and pull apart over millions of years. There are around fifteen major and minor plates, and their edges do not line up with the coastlines on your classroom map.
India sits on its own plate, ramming into Asia and throwing up the Himalayas as it goes — geologically it is arriving, not arrived. A slice of the far east of Russia sits on the North American plate. The boundary that matters to a geologist runs through the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, not along any beach. The plates are the genuine moving parts of the planet. The continents, as we list them, are the shapes we happen to see sticking out above the water at this particular moment.
And “this particular moment” is the next thread to pull — because the continents have not always looked anything like they do now.
The count of seven has an expiry date
Around 300 million years ago there was no need to argue about the number of continents, because there was one. Almost every piece of land on Earth was fused into a single supercontinent that geologists named Pangaea, ringed by a single global ocean. The answer to “how many continents are there” was, for a very long stretch of the planet’s history, simply one.
Pangaea broke apart. The fragments drifted to where we find them today, and they have not stopped. The Atlantic is widening by a few centimetres a year — about the rate your fingernails grow. Africa is slowly splitting along the East African Rift, the early sketch of a future ocean. Geologists who model the deep future expect the continents to gather again into a new supercontinent, sometimes called Pangaea Proxima, perhaps 250 million years from now. Seven is not a permanent fact about the Earth. It is a freeze-frame of a slow-motion film, and the film is still running.
The eighth continent nobody was taught
By now “seven” is looking less like a count and more like a custom — local, undefined, internally contradictory and temporary. So here is the twist that ties the whole story together: even taken on its own terms, the list of seven may be missing one.
In 2017 a team of geologists published the case for Zealandia — a continent of roughly five million square kilometres that satisfies the geological criteria for continental crust: it is the right kind of rock, the right thickness, clearly raised above the ocean floor around it, and large enough. There is just one reason it never made the classroom poster. About 94% of it is underwater. The only substantial parts of Zealandia that break the surface are New Zealand and New Caledonia — the visible peaks of a drowned continent.
Zealandia is the perfect ending to the puzzle because of why it was left off. It was not missed for being too small, or made of the wrong material, or geologically unreal. It was left off for being hard to see — which means the famous list of seven was never a list of the Earth’s continents at all. It was a list of the continents that happen to be mostly dry. That is a fact about sea level, and about us, not about the planet.
A continent nobody had ever seen
Zealandia is missing because it is hard to see. Antarctica raises the opposite problem, and it is just as revealing: it is a continent that, for almost the whole of human history, no one had seen, and yet it was still expected to be there.
For centuries, mapmakers drew a great southern landmass on their charts and labelled it Terra Australis Incognita — the unknown southern land. They had no evidence for it whatsoever. They simply reasoned that the weight of all the land in the northern hemisphere ought to be balanced by land in the south, or the world would somehow tip. It was a guess dressed as geography. Antarctica was not confirmed by human eyes until 1820, and no one is known to have set foot on it until decades after that.
Think about what that means for the count. If you had asked “how many continents are there” in the year 1700, a careful, honest, well-educated person could only have answered six — because the seventh had not yet been found. The number is not just culturally local; it is historically contingent. It changes as human knowledge changes. And if it could climb from six to seven within living memory of our great-great-grandparents, the obvious question is whether it has finished moving — which is exactly the door Zealandia walked through.
The continent that is mostly ocean
Look again at the standard seven and one of them does not behave like the others. Six of the seven are, broadly, single connected slabs of land. The seventh — usually called Oceania — is not a landmass at all. It is a scatter of one large country, Australia, plus thousands of islands spread across a third of the planet’s surface, most of it open Pacific. You could sail through “Oceania” for days and never see it.
This is why you will often see the seventh continent named three different ways — Oceania, Australasia, or just Australia — and the three are not the same. Some definitions mean only the Australian continental landmass. Others mean the whole island realm out to Hawaii and Easter Island. The seventh slot on the list is doing something the other six are not: it is a category for “everything else,” a tidy-up box for the land that the other continents left over. A list with a leftover box in it is not a clean classification — it is an admission.
Why Australia wins and Greenland loses
That leftover box hides one last, sharp little puzzle — the one that catches almost everybody out. Australia is called a continent. Greenland is called an island. But Australia is only about three and a half times larger than Greenland, and they are both single chunks of land surrounded by sea. Where, exactly, is the line between a very big island and a small continent?
There isn’t one. There is no size at which an island is promoted to a continent. The real answer is that Australia sits on its own continental plate, of its own distinct continental crust, while Greenland is a piece sitting on the North American plate — it is part of an existing continent’s geology, not a separate one. But notice what just happened: to tell an island from a continent in the one case where it is genuinely tricky, we had to abandon the schoolroom definition entirely and reach for plate tectonics. The familiar “big land with water around it” idea cannot even reliably sort its own list. The professionals quietly use a different rule — and that rule, as we have seen, produces a different number.
So how many continents are there?
After all of that, you still deserve a straight answer, so here are all of them at once. If you want the number taught across most of the English-speaking world, it is seven: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania. If you were taught in much of Europe or Latin America, it is six. If you follow the strict geological logic and merge every joined landmass, you can reach five or even four. And if you count by continental crust rather than by what is dry, you should arguably add Zealandia and reach eight.
None of those is a mistake. Each is the honest output of a particular, defensible rule. The reason “how many continents are there” has no single answer is the same reason “how many countries are there” has no single answer: the hard part was never the counting. It was agreeing on what you are allowed to count — and on that, the world never did.
There is no true number of continents. There is a definition — usually unspoken, usually inherited — and then there is the number that definition produces. Seven is a fine answer. It is just not the only one, and now you know exactly why.
