Two kinds of eyes, two completely different jobs
A bee’s five eyes split into two very different tools. The two compound eyes are the big, dark, oval ones on the sides of the head, and each is built from thousands of tiny lenses called facets — roughly 6,900 in a worker bee. Every facet captures one fragment of the scene, and the brain stitches them into a single mosaic image. The payoff is a near-360° field of view, full colour, and astonishing motion detection — which is the real reason a bee dodges your hand so easily.
The three ocelli are the odd ones out: tiny single-lens eyes arranged in a triangle on top of the head. They don’t form pictures at all. Instead they work as light meters, sensing brightness and the polarised light of the sky to keep the bee oriented to the sun and steady in flight. So a bee navigates with one set of eyes and sees the world with the other.
A flower looks nothing like this to a bee
Here’s the part that surprises people most. A bee’s colour vision is shifted compared to ours: it can see ultraviolet, which is invisible to humans, but it cannot see red — red simply appears dark, almost black. So the colour map a bee works with is completely different from yours.
Flowers have spent millions of years exploiting exactly this. Many wear bold ultraviolet patterns — bullseyes, stripes and “landing strips” known as nectar guides — that are totally invisible to us but blaze out to a bee, pointing it straight to the nectar and pollen. Weird and wonderful eye facts
Bee eyes are stranger than they look. They’re hairy: tiny hairs grow between the facets of the compound eyes, and they’re thought to sense wind direction and airspeed in flight. Drones have giant eyes: the males’ compound eyes are so enlarged (around 8,600 facets) that they nearly meet on top of the head — all the better to spot and chase a queen during high-speed mating flights. Queens, who rarely need sharp vision, have the smallest eyes of the three.
Bees also see fast. Their flicker-fusion rate — how quickly they can resolve flashes of motion — far outpaces ours, so a world that looks smooth to us looks crisp and slow-motion to a bee in flight. Much of what we know traces back to the Austrian scientist Karl von Frisch, who proved bees have true colour vision and can see ultraviolet, work that fed into his Nobel-winning decoding of the honeybee “waggle dance.”
