What makes a brass instrument brass?
The simplest definition is the most surprising: a brass instrument is one whose sound is produced by the player's lips vibrating against a cup-shaped or funnel-shaped mouthpiece. That is the entire test. Material is irrelevant.
Two consequences of that rule trip up almost everyone. The saxophone is made of brass, gleaming and yellow, and looks like a curled-up cousin of the trumpet — but Adolphe Sax built it with a single cane reed, the same kind a clarinet uses. By the sound-production rule, the saxophone is a woodwind. The Australian didgeridoo goes the other way: it is hollowed-out wood, but the player buzzes their lips against the open end, so under the Hornbostel-Sachs system the didgeridoo is classed as a brass aerophone.
Inside that one rule there is room for an entire family. Once you have lip-buzzing into a tube, every other decision — cup vs funnel mouthpiece, narrow vs wide bore, slide vs valves, 1.4 m of tubing or 5.5 m of it — changes the instrument's voice without changing its kind.

For most of brass history, players were stuck. A trumpet or horn could only sound the notes in its harmonic series — a sequence of pitches naturally produced by a fixed length of tubing. In the low register that gave you about three usable notes, which is why early military signals (and Bach's Baroque trumpet writing in the high "clarino" range) sound the way they do.
In 1814, two Prussian musicians — Heinrich Stölzel and Friedrich Blühmel — patented a workable valve mechanism. Pressing a valve diverts the air through a short additional length of tubing, which lowers the pitch by a fixed interval. Three valves in combination can lower the pitch by any chromatic step inside an octave. The instrument finally had a complete scale.
Two valve types coexist today: piston valves (trumpet, tuba) and rotary valves (most French horns, many German trumpets and tubas). The trombone ignored valves entirely; its slide had already given it chromatic playing since the 15th century, when it was called the sackbut.
Beyond the orchestra
The orchestral five are only the most visible members. The wider brass family includes:
- Cornet — invented in France in the 1820s; dominant solo brass in Britain and the US before 1920; still the lead voice in British brass bands.
- Flugelhorn — German military origin, 1830s; pulled into jazz by Clark Terry, Chuck Mangione and Miles Davis on Sketches of Spain (1960).
- Euphonium and baritone horn — the tenor voices of the wind band; both invented in the 1840s.
- Sousaphone — designed for John Philip Sousa in 1893 by J.W. Pepper, with C.G. Conn's redesign in 1898 becoming the standard. A tuba wrapped around the player so it could be marched.
- Wagner tuba — built to Richard Wagner's spec for Der Ring des Nibelungen (premiered 1876). Played by horn players, not tuba players.
- Natural trumpet, natural horn, serpent, ophicleide — historical members, valveless or with finger-holes, mostly retired but still played in period-instrument ensembles.
Count generously and the brass family runs past 20 distinct named instruments. Count strictly — only the ones a modern symphony hires — and you are back to five.

Why the tuba is huge and the trumpet is tiny
The pitch a brass instrument sounds is set, more than anything else, by the length of its tubing. Double the length and you drop the note by an octave. The reason the tuba is so much bigger than the trumpet is not the bell — it is that the tube the air has to travel through is roughly four times as long.
That is why instruments get coiled. A French horn unspooled would be about 3.7 m of straight tubing; a tuba is around 5.5 m; a contrabass tuba over 7 m. Coiling brings the instrument down to a size a human can actually hold.
The mouthpiece shape sets the timbre. A cup-shaped mouthpiece (trumpet, trombone) gives a bright, projecting tone. A funnel-shaped mouthpiece (horn, tuba) gives a darker, more rounded sound. That single design choice is most of why the trumpet cuts through an orchestra and the horn blends into it.
