One family, three ways to make sound
Every woodwind in the world makes its sound one of three ways: air split across a sharp edge, a single reed slapping against a mouthpiece, or two reeds buzzing against each other. Pick a source and hear the same short tune in that timbre.
Air is blown across a sharp edge — the lip plate of a flute, the fipple of a recorder. The airstream splits above and below the edge and excites the column of air inside the tube. No reed at all. The result is the purest, most singing tone in the family.
- Concert flute — The modern Boehm-system flute, standardised by Theobald Boehm in 1847. The lead woodwind in the orchestra above the oboe.
- Piccolo — An octave higher than the concert flute. Half the size, twice the cut — the highest standard orchestral instrument.
- Alto, bass and contrabass flute — Lower members of the flute family, mostly heard in flute choirs and 20th-century concert works.

Three sound sources, one family
Every woodwind is an aerophone — an instrument whose sound is produced by a vibrating column of air inside a tube. What divides the family into three is what gets the air column vibrating in the first place. The choice changes the entire sound.
Edge tone. Air is blown across a sharp edge — the side hole on a transverse flute, the fipple on a recorder, the lip of an ocarina. The airstream alternates rapidly above and below the edge, which sets the air column inside the tube oscillating. Because no reed touches the player's lips, the resulting tone is the purest in the family: very few harmonics, breath audible underneath, no buzz. The 43,000-year-old bone flutes of Swabian Jura belong here.
Single reed. A thin sliver of cane is clamped against a hard mouthpiece by a metal ligature. The reed flaps against the mouthpiece thousands of times a second — it is, acoustically, a vibrating valve that opens and shuts the airway. The clarinet, with its cylindrical bore, mostly produces odd-numbered harmonics, which is why a clarinet does not sound like an oboe even on the same note. The saxophone sits here too, despite the body being made of brass.
Double reed. Two slices of cane are bound facing each other onto a small metal staple, with no mouthpiece between them and the player's lips. The reeds slap into each other at the speed of the note. This is by far the most physically demanding part of the family — oboists and bassoonists spend hours making their own reeds, because no two commercial reeds play exactly the same.
The orchestral four
A standard symphony orchestra carries one player on each of four woodwinds, with the principal on each instrument also responsible for doubling onto a related family member (the second flautist usually doubles piccolo; the second oboist plays cor anglais; one clarinettist switches to bass clarinet; one bassoonist plays contrabassoon). Eight or nine wind players in total, covering nearly four octaves.
The standard four were largely settled by the late 18th century. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Serenade No. 10 ("Gran Partita," K. 361, 1781) and Clarinet Concerto (K. 622, 1791) cemented the clarinet's place — the instrument was only about 80 years old when Mozart wrote for it. Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf (1936) is the canonical introduction to all four voices: the flute is the bird, the oboe is the duck, the clarinet is the cat, and the bassoon is the grandfather. Generations of children have learned the woodwind section from it.

The saxophone was patented in Brussels in 1846 by Adolphe Sax — the same musical inventor who designed the saxhorn family used in brass bands. Sax was trying to bridge a gap: he wanted an instrument with the projection of a brass instrument and the agility of a woodwind. He built it from brass for the strength and resonance, and he gave it a single-reed mouthpiece very similar to a clarinet's.
By the standard 1914 Hornbostel-Sachs classification, what decides an instrument's family is how its sound is produced, not what it is made of. A saxophone vibrates a cane reed against a hard mouthpiece — that is the same physical mechanism as a clarinet. So it is a woodwind. The body could be made of wood, metal, plastic or carbon fibre and the classification would not change.
The rule cuts the other way too. The Australian didgeridoo is wooden, but the player buzzes their lips against the open end — the same mechanism as a trumpet. By Hornbostel-Sachs, the didgeridoo is classed as a brass aerophone, despite never going near a brass workshop. Material does not decide. The woodwind is the oldest instrument family
In 2008 and 2009, archaeologist Nicholas J. Conard and his team from the University of Tübingen excavated bone fragments from the Hohle Fels and Geißenklösterle caves in the Swabian Jura, southwestern Germany. The pieces fitted together into recognisable flutes — carved from the wing bones of griffon vultures and from mammoth ivory, with finger holes spaced for melodic playing. The discovery was published in Nature in 2009. Subsequent radiocarbon work by Tom Higham and colleagues, published in 2012, dated the earliest examples to approximately 42,000–43,000 years old.
The Swabian flutes are by some margin the oldest undisputed musical instruments ever found. They are edge-tone aerophones — direct ancestors of every modern flute. The implication is striking: musical complexity in the human species is older than agriculture, older than cities, older than written language. Before our ancestors made pots, they made flutes.
And the family has been quietly expanding ever since. The clarinet was developed around 1700 in Nuremberg by Johann Christoph Denner. The modern Boehm flute was patented in 1847. The saxophone arrived in 1846. The newest member is whichever experimental wind controller a composer wired up this morning.
