How Many Moons Does Saturn Have?
Most are tiny captured rocks far out on tilted orbits — 128 of them confirmed on a single day in March 2025. The stars of the system are Titan — bigger than Mercury, with seas of liquid methane — and Enceladus, which fires ocean water into space. And uniquely, some of Saturn’s moons orbit inside the rings, carving the gaps you can see from Earth.

The rings and the major moons share one tilted plane, so they orbit together — tap any moon to explore it. The faint dots far out stand in for Saturn’s ~268 irregular moons — steeply tilted, eccentric orbits, most of them travelling backwards (retrograde), which is genuinely how these captured moons move. Why the number is so high — and keeps changing
For years Saturn and Jupiter traded the moon crown. Then on 11 March 2025 the IAU’s Minor Planet Center confirmed 128 new moons in a single announcement — the largest moon haul in history — lifting Saturn from 146 to 274. Two more batches (11 moons in March 2026, 7 more by 9 April 2026) brought the total to 292. The discoverers, led by Edward Ashton with Brett Gladman’s group, spent years photographing the same patches of sky with the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope and stacking the exposures until 1–2 km rocks emerged from the noise — as Ashton put it, the team “revisited the same sky fields for three consecutive months” to nail the orbits.
Almost every new moon is a few kilometres across, looping far out on a tilted, often backwards orbit — the shattered debris of larger captured bodies, clustered into collisional families that share near-identical paths. They are roughly 100 million times too faint for the naked eye, and hundreds more candidates have been glimpsed once, awaiting confirmation. There is even a genuine debate about where a tiny “moon” ends and a large “ring particle” begins — there is no minimum size for a moon — which is part of why the count keeps moving, and why it will keep rising.

Three mythologies, three orbital gangs
Only 64 of the 292 have names, and the naming system is a map in disguise. The tradition began in 1847, when John Herschel proposed naming Saturn’s moons after the Titans — siblings of the god Cronus (Saturn). When the Titans ran out, the IAU’s Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature turned to three other mythologies, assigned by orbit: Norse names for the huge retrograde swarm (Phoebe’s gang), Inuit and Gallic names for the two tilted prograde clans. Read a Saturnian moon’s name and you know which way it flies.
The other 228 wait with licence-plate designations like S/2023 S 1 — and most will wait forever, since the IAU no longer hands out mythological names to the smallest finds. Why does Saturn have rings — and the others barely do?
All four giant planets have rings, but only Saturn’s are spectacular — and the leading explanation is darkly fitting for the planet with the most moons: Saturn’s rings may be a moon that died. The rings are almost pure water ice and look startlingly young, perhaps only 100–200 million years old. A leading theory holds that a moon nicknamed Chrysalis wandered too close, was torn apart by Saturn’s tides, and had its icy mantle stripped into the ring we see — a fresh 2026 study added new weight to the idea.
That happens at the Roche limit — the distance inside which a planet’s gravity rips a body apart faster than the body’s own gravity can hold it together. Outside that line, debris gathers into moons; inside it, things shatter into rings. So Saturn’s rings and its 292 moons aren’t separate facts — they’re two outcomes of the same gravitational machine, sorted by distance.
And the surviving moons still shape the wreckage. As the widget shows, Pan and Daphnis ride inside the rings carving clean gaps, while Mimas keeps the Cassini Division swept clear from afar. The rings aren’t a backdrop to the moons — they’re made by them, and possibly from one of them.
