Numbers That Make the Universe Real

Why Space Numbers Break Human Intuition

Human brains evolved to count things we could hold, hunt, or gather. We are profoundly ill-equipped to comprehend the scale of the cosmos. To understand space, you have to abandon intuition and trust the numbers. When we say there are 200 billion stars in our galaxy alone, it means there are roughly 25 stars for every single human being alive today.

The distances are equally baffling. Light is the fastest thing in the universe, travelling at nearly 300,000 kilometres per second. Yet, when we look at the Andromeda Galaxy, our closest large galactic neighbour, the light we see left there 2.5 million years ago — before modern humans even existed. In 2016, 3D modelling of Hubble telescope data shocked the astronomical community by revising the number of galaxies in the observable universe from 200 billion to a staggering 2 trillion.

The Sky Humans Drew

Long before telescopes, people connected the brightest stars into pictures — hunters, animals, kings. Those pictures became the 88 constellations astronomers still use today, formalised by the International Astronomical Union in the 1920s so that every patch of sky has an address. Most of the famous shapes, though, are not constellations at all but asterisms: the Big Dipper is just the seven brightest stars of the much larger Ursa Major, and the Summer Triangle borrows one star each from three separate constellations.

How many you can actually see on a given night has less to do with the sky than with where you stand. Under a truly dark desert sky the human eye can pick out around 2,500 stars at once; from a city centre, light pollution can leave just a few dozen. It is the single biggest reason two people can look up at the same moment and disagree wildly about how full the sky is.

The Solar System Is Bigger Than You Think

Diagrams in science textbooks do us a disservice. They show the planets neatly lined up right next to each other. In reality, space is mostly just that: space. The Moon looks close in the night sky, but at 384,400 kilometres away, you could fit every other planet in the solar system (including Jupiter) in the gap between Earth and the Moon.

Our furthest man-made object, Voyager 1, has been travelling at roughly 61,000 km/h since 1977. It has finally left the solar system and entered interstellar space, but it will still take it another 40,000 years just to drift past the next closest star.

The Engines That Try to Cross It

Escaping Earth is its own kind of arithmetic. A Falcon 9 lifts off on nine Merlin engines producing about 7,600 kilonewtons of thrust, yet its real trick isn't power — it's that the rocket can lose one or even two of those engines mid-ascent and still reach orbit. SpaceX proved it on the CRS-1 mission in 2012, when an engine shut down in flight and the rocket simply re-planned its burn.

Its successor goes much further. Starship's Super Heavy booster fires 33 Raptor engines at once — the most powerful rocket ever flown — running the fiendishly difficult full-flow staged-combustion cycle at the highest chamber pressure of any operational engine in history. Curiously, none of it is patented: SpaceX guards its engine technology as trade secrets rather than hand rivals a public blueprint.
