Eight planets, two families
Moving outward from the Sun, the first four — Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars — are small, dense and rocky. Beyond the asteroid belt come the giants: Jupiter and Saturn, vast balls of gas, and Uranus and Neptune, colder “ice giants” rich in water, ammonia and methane. The Sun itself holds about 99.8% of all the mass in the system, so every planet is really just orbiting debris left over from its birth 4.6 billion years ago.
Is Pluto a planet?
For 76 years it was the ninth planet. Then in 2006 the International Astronomical Union set three tests for planethood: a body must orbit the Sun, be round, and have cleared its orbital neighbourhood of other debris. Pluto passes the first two but shares its lane with countless icy bodies in the Kuiper Belt, so it was reclassified as a dwarf planet.
The trigger was the discovery of Eris, a far-off world almost identical in size to Pluto. Rather than crown a tenth planet, astronomers redrew the line. Five dwarf planets are now officially recognised — Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake and Eris — and some researchers still hunt for a genuine, undiscovered Planet Nine far beyond Neptune to explain the strange clustering of the most distant orbits.
How close are we to finding life?
Nowhere beyond Earth has life been confirmed — but several worlds are now under serious investigation. Here is where the strongest cases stand today:
🔴Mars
A rock called Cheyava Falls holds organic molecules and "leopard spots" — patterns that on Earth usually come from microbes.
Perseverance is sampling now. A sample-return mission to confirm it is over budget and uncertain — answers are years away.
🌊Europa
Beneath its ice lies a salt-water ocean holding about twice as much water as all of Earth's oceans combined.
Europa Clipper (launched 2024). Arrives 2030 for 49 close flybys to test whether the ocean could be habitable.
❄️Enceladus
Geysers at its south pole spray water, organic molecules and phosphorus — a full checklist of life's ingredients — into space.
Sampled remotely by Cassini. No new mission is flying yet, but it is a leading future target.
🟠Titan
Rivers and seas of liquid methane and a thick organic haze make it resemble a deep-frozen version of the early Earth.
Dragonfly nuclear rotorcraft. Launches 2028 and lands in 2034 to fly between sites sampling its chemistry.
🟡Venus
A disputed trace of phosphine gas high in its clouds could hint at microbes — or at chemistry we simply do not understand yet.
DAVINCI, VERITAS and ESA’s EnVision. Late-2020s to 2030s, when probes will sample the clouds directly.
The honest verdict: we have tantalising hints — a Martian rock, plumes of life-friendly chemicals, hidden oceans — but no proof. The clinching evidence is likely to come from missions arriving in the 2030s, or from Mars samples that still need a ride home.
