How Many Constellations Are There?
Exactly 88. Not the 12 of the zodiac, not the “thousands” the night sky seems to hold — 88, fixed by international agreement in 1922, with borders so precise that every single point in the sky belongs to one and only one of them.

The number that was decided, not discovered
For most of history there was no agreed answer. Different cultures drew different figures, and even European star atlases disagreed — one mapmaker’s sky held a hot-air balloon, a cat, a printing press and a reindeer that no one else recognised. By the 1800s, charts showed more than a hundred competing patterns, many invented to flatter a king or a patron.
The matter was settled at the first General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Rome in 1922, where astronomers adopted a list of 88 constellations with standard three-letter abbreviations, compiled by the American astronomer Henry Norris Russell. The list still lacked exact borders, so the Belgian astronomer Eugène Delporte was tasked with drawing them. His boundaries — straight lines of right ascension and declination, fixed to the sky of 1875 — were approved in 1928 and published in 1930 in a book whose title translates as the Scientific Delimitation of the Constellations. Since then a constellation has not really been a picture at all: it is a region of sky, like a country on a map, and every star, galaxy and comet falls inside exactly one.
48 ancient, 40 modern — except the maths has a twist
The usual shorthand is “48 ancient plus 40 modern.” The 48 come from Ptolemy’s Almagest, written around 150 AD, which gathered the Greek and Mesopotamian figures of the northern sky. The rest were added later: when European ships reached the southern hemisphere in the 1590s, the Dutch navigators Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman charted 12 new southern constellations — the peacock, the toucan, the flying fish — and in the 1750s Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille filled the remaining gaps with 14 more.
But that tidy 48-plus-40 doesn’t divide today’s 88 quite so neatly. Count the ancient-rooted constellations in the modern list and you get 51, not 48 — because Ptolemy’s single enormous ship, Argo Navis, was later broken into three (Carina, Puppis and Vela), and Coma Berenices, which he treated as a fuzzy patch in the tail of Leo, was promoted to a constellation of its own. The zodiac is only 12 of them
The zodiac constellations are the band that the Sun, Moon and planets appear to travel through — Aries, Taurus, Gemini and the other nine. They are the only constellations most people can name, which is why “how many constellations” so often gets answered with “twelve.” But twelve is the count astrology uses, not astronomy. The Sun’s actual path, the ecliptic, also clips the corner of a thirteenth: Ophiuchus, the serpent-bearer, which the Sun crosses for about three weeks every year. Biggest, smallest, brightest
The 88 are wildly uneven. The largest, Hydra the water snake, sprawls across about 1,303 square degrees — more than a quarter of the way around the sky. The smallest, Crux the Southern Cross, fits into roughly 68 square degrees, small enough to hide behind your hand at arm’s length. The whole sky comes to 41,253 square degrees, and the brightest star sitting in any of these regions is Sirius, in Canis Major. Tally up what the figures depict and you get 42 animals, 29 objects and 17 humans or mythological characters — a bestiary three thousand years in the making.
Why the Big Dipper isn’t on the list
The most famous shape in the northern sky isn’t a constellation at all. The Big Dipper is an asterism — a memorable pattern that is only part of a constellation. Its seven stars are the brightest of Ursa Major, the Great Bear, which is far larger and far fainter than the Dipper alone. The Summer Triangle is stranger still: it borrows one bright star each from three separate constellations (Lyra, Cygnus and Aquila). Asterisms are how people actually navigate the sky; the 88 constellations are how astronomers file it. We count the Dipper’s stars in how many stars are in the Big Dipper.
Will the sky ever get an 89th?
Almost certainly not. The map of the Earth keeps changing as borders are redrawn, but the map of the sky was deliberately frozen. Because the 88 regions already cover the entire celestial sphere with no gaps, there is nowhere to put a new one without taking territory from a neighbour — and the whole point of Delporte’s 1930 borders was to stop exactly that kind of squabbling.
What the 88 don’t capture is that they are one culture’s sky. The list is overwhelmingly Greek and European; the constellations that Aboriginal Australians, Polynesian navigators or the Inca read in the same stars — including the dark shapes they saw in the spaces between the bright ones — never made it onto the official chart. The Southern Cross that Lacaille filed as a constellation was a sacred emu’s head to the people who had watched it for forty thousand years.
So the real answer to “how many constellations are there” isn’t a number you can see. It’s a number a committee agreed on in Rome in 1922 — 88 invisible fences drawn across a sky humans had been naming, and arguing over, for three thousand years.
