Seven bright stars make the famous shape — but the Big Dipper isn’t even a constellation, and the count gets slippery fast. Add the star hiding beside Mizar and it’s eight. Look through a telescope at that one spot and it’s six stars on its own.

Seven stars — but not a constellation

The Big Dipper’s seven stars are Dubhe, Merak, Phecda and Megrez (the bowl), then Alioth, Mizar and Alkaid (the handle). What surprises people is that they don’t form a constellation. They’re an asterism — an informal, memorable pattern with no official status — and they make up only the brightest corner of Ursa Major, the Great Bear, which is the third-largest of the 88 constellations at nearly 1,300 square degrees. The Dipper is the easy-to-spot handle on a much bigger, fainter bear.

The eighth star hiding in plain sight

Look closely at the bend in the handle and the middle star, Mizar, has a faint companion right beside it: Alcor. The two sit about 12 arcminutes apart — roughly a third of the Moon’s width — and the Arabs called them the “horse and rider.” Splitting them with the naked eye has been a folk eyesight test for centuries. So a fair answer to “how many stars” is eight.

And it keeps multiplying. Mizar was the first double star ever seen through a telescope, around 1617, and the first whose duplicity was found by spectroscopy, at Harvard in 1889. Today we know Mizar is four stars locked together, and Alcor is two — so that single kink in the handle is a six-star system. Several of the other “stars” are doubles too. The seven points of light you see are really a crowd.

Why the shape won’t last

Here is the strangest part: the Dipper is temporary. Five of its seven stars — Merak, Phecda, Megrez, Alioth and Mizar — belong to the Ursa Major Moving Group, a loose family of stars born together and drifting through the galaxy as one, about 80 light-years away. It’s the nearest such group to the Sun. But Dubhe (123 light-years) and Alkaid (104 light-years) just happen to lie along the same line of sight; they’re unrelated, and they’re moving in completely different directions.

So as the centuries pass, the five hold formation while Dubhe and Alkaid wander off, slowly bending the bowl and warping the handle. The Dipper that Ice Age hunters looked up at didn’t quite match ours, and in 100,000 years the shape will be unrecognisable. Drag the slider on the map back and forth to watch it deform.

How to use it tonight

The Big Dipper is the best signpost in the northern sky. The two stars on the outer edge of the bowl, Dubhe and Merak, are the pointers: trace a line through them and extend it about five times their separation and you land on Polaris, the North Star, which marks true north. Follow the curve of the handle the other way and you “arc to Arcturus, then speed on to Spica,” two of the brightest stars in the sky. From the mid-northern latitudes the Dipper never sets — it wheels around Polaris all night and all year, which is why people have used it as a clock and a compass for thousands of years.

One pattern, a hundred names

Because it’s so bright and never sets, almost every northern culture named it. In Britain and Ireland it’s the Plough; older English called it Charles’s Wain, the wagon. In India it’s the Saptarishi, the seven sages; in China the Northern Dipper, Běidǒu. The Iroquois saw the bowl as a bear and the three handle stars as hunters chasing it. And to people escaping slavery in the United States it was the Drinking Gourd — “follow the Drinking Gourd” meant follow its pointers north to freedom. The same seven accidental stars, read as a wagon, a bear, a saucepan, a map home.

A shape that was never really there

The Big Dipper is a kind of cosmic accident. Its seven stars aren’t neighbours — they range from 80 to 123 light-years away and mostly have nothing to do with each other. The “shape” is just the angle we happen to view them from, frozen for a few tens of thousands of years out of the galaxy’s billions. Shift the Earth a few hundred light-years in any direction and the pattern dissolves completely.

And yet that fluke became one of the most useful objects in human history — a compass that pointed enslaved people toward free states, a clock for sailors, a calendar for farmers, a god’s wagon, a bear, seven sages. We took a temporary trick of perspective and hung three thousand years of meaning on it.

So how many stars are in the Big Dipper? Seven, if you mean the shape. Eight, if you’re counting carefully. More, if you look closer. And for a little while longer, a Dipper at all.
