The seasons myth — closest in winter, not summer

It feels obvious that summer must be when Earth is nearest the Sun. It is the reverse. Earth reaches perihelion — its closest point, 147.1 million km — in early January, the depth of Northern-Hemisphere winter. It is farthest away in early July.

Seasons come from the 23.5° tilt of Earth’s axis, which changes how directly sunlight strikes each hemisphere through the year — not from the small change in distance. The five-million-kilometre swing is only about 3% of the total, far too little to overrule the tilt. If distance ruled the seasons, both hemispheres would have summer and winter at the same time, which they plainly do not.

Why this one gap became the Solar System’s ruler

For most of history nobody knew this distance — they knew the shape of the Solar System but not its size. Astronomers could say Mars was 1.5 times farther out than Earth long before they could put a single kilometre on any of it. The Earth’s distance to the Sun was the missing scale bar; once you nailed it, every other distance fell into place. That is why it became a unit in its own right. Saying Jupiter is “5.2 AU” away is just saying “5.2 Earth-to-Suns”.

And the gap is no longer untouchable. On 24 December 2024, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe flew just 6.1 million km above the Sun’s surface at 692,000 km/h — and matched that record again through 2025. On a scale where the Earth–Sun distance is a one-metre stick, Parker came within about 4 centimetres of the Sun.
