How Many Grand Theft Auto Games Are There?
Seven mainline games — about to become eight when GTA VI arrives on 19 November 2026. Count the handhelds and expansions too and you land at roughly 16. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you call a "GTA game."
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch. Set in a modern Vice City within the state of Leonida.
Build your own GTA count
Mainline titles are always in. Add the categories you think should count.
Toggle everything on and you get around 16; some lists climb to 18 by counting the Definitive Edition remasters and the two London packs separately.
The short answer — and why it’s fuzzy
The clean count is seven mainline entries: the 1997 original, GTA 2, then III, Vice City and San Andreas, then IV and V. GTA VI makes eight when it launches in November 2026. That's the number most people mean.
It gets fuzzy because the series spans three distinct "universes," each a clean reboot: the top-down 2D Universe (1997–1999), the 3D Universe (III through San Andreas), and the HD Universe (IV onward). Scattered across those eras are handheld games and expansions that are absolutely standalone GTA titles — they just don't carry a main number. Include them and the count roughly doubles, which is why you'll see "8," "16" and "18" all quoted as correct.
GTA VI: the November 2026 launch
Grand Theft Auto VI is set to release on Thursday, 19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — no PC version confirmed at launch. Getting to that date has been a saga: Rockstar first targeted fall 2025, slipped to 26 May 2026, then in November 2025 pushed it to its current November window, apologising to fans in a rare public statement.
The game returns to a modern Vice City, within a fictionalised Florida called the state of Leonida, and stars a criminal couple — Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, with Lucia as the series' first female lead protagonist. Its first trailer, released in December 2023, broke video-view records, and a second followed in May 2025. Analysts expect it to be the biggest entertainment launch in history, with some projecting around 20 million copies sold on day one.
The best-selling story in gaming
The reason a new GTA is such an event: the last one never stopped selling. As of Take-Two's May 2026 earnings call, GTA V has sold over 230 million copies — the second-best-selling video game ever, behind only Minecraft. A thirteen-year-old game, it still moves roughly 5 million copies every quarter.
Across all titles, the franchise has now sold around 465–470 million units. GTA V alone hit $1 billion in retail sales within three days of its 2013 launch, and combined with the long tail of GTA Online microtransactions it's widely described as the most profitable entertainment product ever made. That's the commercial baseline GTA VI inherits.
The games everyone forgets
The titles that make the count ambiguous are the ones that didn't get a number. On handhelds, Rockstar built four full games: GTA Advance (2004), Liberty City Stories (2005), Vice City Stories (2006) and the cel-shaded Chinatown Wars (2009) — the last often cited as one of the best games on the Nintendo DS.
Then there are the expansions: two add-on packs for the original game, London 1969 and London 1961 — the only time the series has left the United States — and GTA IV's two episodes, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, each a substantial standalone story. Whether those four "count" is exactly the line that turns 7 into 16.
The franchise that almost never ships
What's strange about GTA isn't how many games there are — it's how few. While rivals push out a new entry every year, Rockstar has released just one mainline GTA in the last seventeen years. GTA VI arrives more than thirteen years after GTA V. By the cadence of the games industry, the series barely exists.
And yet it dominates. The scarcity is the strategy: each release is an era-defining event rather than a yearly update — which is exactly why a single countdown can hold the attention of the entire gaming world.
