How Many People Play Minecraft Worldwide?

Around 212 million people play Minecraft every month, with daily active players in the tens of millions. The game peaked at roughly 222.5 million monthly players in June 2025, right after the film’s release, and has sold over 350 million copies (confirmed by Mojang in April 2025) — more than any other game in history. Those numbers are so large they stop meaning anything. The comparator below fixes that.

📊 How big is that, really? Compare it

“212 million players” is hard to picture. Stack Minecraft against another giant and the scale becomes obvious. Pick any two.

Best-selling game ever
350M copies sold
Monthly players: ~212M (est.)
Best-selling single release
225M copies sold
Monthly players: (est.)
Lifetime copies sold
Minecraft350M copies
Grand Theft Auto V225M copies

Copies-sold figures are confirmed lifetime totals. Tetris’s 520M is an aggregate across 200+ separate ports; Minecraft’s 350M is a single franchise. Roblox and Fortnite are free, so they have no copy-sales line — only player estimates, which vary by source.

Why the player count is hard to pin down

No two trackers agree, and the reason is the two editions. Java Edition is the original PC version, sold once and beloved by modders. Bedrock Edition is the cross-platform build that runs on consoles, mobile and Windows, and it’s where most of the headline numbers come from. On top of that sits a separate Chinese edition, run by NetEase, with its own enormous download count that some global tallies fold in and others leave out. So “212 million monthly” is the widely-cited mid-2025 figure, but you’ll see anything from 170M to 225M depending on which editions a source counts.

The movie that pushed players to an all-time high

A Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, opened April 4, 2025 and grossed $961.2 million worldwide on a $150 million budget — the year’s biggest blockbuster for months and the highest-grossing video-game film adaptation ever. The “Chicken Jockey” scene became a genuine cinema phenomenon. Crucially for this page, the film drove Minecraft’s monthly players to their all-time peak in June 2025. A sequel, A Minecraft Movie Squared, is already dated for July 2027 with Hess and most of the cast returning.

Minecraft Education: a second, separate audience

Beyond the players counted above, there’s a parallel ecosystem most stat round-ups miss. Minecraft Education (originally Minecraft: Education Edition, launched 2016) is used in classrooms across more than 130 countries, with millions of active student licences. It teaches everything from chemistry to coding inside the same block world. It’s why “is Minecraft educational” is one of the highest-value searches around the game — and why the player base skews far younger and more institutional than a pure entertainment title.

Mods: the reason Java players never leave

A large slice of the long-term, high-engagement audience is there for one thing the base game doesn’t ship: mods. Java Edition’s open code spawned an entire economy — loaders like Forge and Fabric, modpacks with hundreds of pieces stacked together, and total-conversion projects that turn the game into something unrecognisable. Mods are the single biggest reason Java players stay for years rather than months, and they kept the game culturally alive through every lull between official updates. (Bedrock has the paid Marketplace instead, where creators have collectively earned over $500 million.)

Where did the creator and founders go?

Minecraft was built largely by one person — Markus “Notch” Persson — who founded Mojang in 2009 with Jakob Porsér (business) and Carl Manneh (CEO). When Microsoft bought Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014, all three left. Persson said he walked away to protect his sanity, bought a $70 million Beverly Hills mansion, and — by his own account — has struggled to make anything land since. His ambitious space-sim 0x10c was abandoned mid-development in 2013; the Mojang card game Scrolls faded; and a 2025 social-media poll saw him float a “Minecraft 2” before pivoting to a small roguelike called Levers and Chests. Notably, the person who actually carried Minecraft to these record numbers isn’t a founder at all: Jens “Jeb” Bergensten, who took creative lead in 2011 and still runs it.

Perspective

The creator walked away from his masterpiece — would you?

Here is the part the player count can’t show you. The game now played by 212 million people a month was sold off, in full, by the man who wrote most of it in his spare time — and he has openly said he regrets parts of how it went. Notch took the $2.5 billion and his freedom, and what he reportedly found on the other side was isolation and a creative block he’s never fully cleared. Every project since (0x10c, Scrolls, the half-joked Minecraft 2) stalled under the weight of being “the Minecraft guy.” The biggest-selling game in history is, for its creator, a thing he chose to stop owning.

And the game didn’t miss him. It hit its all-time peak in 2025 — eleven years after he left — driven by a $961 million movie and a low-key lead developer, Jeb, who most players couldn’t name. That’s the uncomfortable lesson hidden in the headcount: a sandbox with no fixed goal belongs to its players more than its author, and it turned out not to need the author at all. The 350 million copies kept selling regardless of whose name was on the credits.

So when you ask how many people play Minecraft, you’re really asking how big a thing one person can make and then let go of. The answer — 212 million a month, and climbing without him — is its own kind of verdict on whether walking away was the mistake everyone assumed it was.
