How many video games have sold over 100 million copies?

Remarkably few — just three single titles have ever crossed it: Tetris, Minecraft and Grand Theft Auto V. After those, the next-best games stall in the 70s and 80s of millions, just shy of the line.

The 100-million club

Who cleared the line?

A 520-million total spread across four decades and countless versions, from the Game Boy to mobile — so it leads the list, with an asterisk about how you count it.

Only three have done it

Selling 100 million copies of one game is staggeringly rare, and each member of the club got there a different way. Tetris tops the charts at around 520 million — but that figure is spread across four decades and dozens of versions, so it comes with a footnote about how you count it. Minecraft is the cleaner record: roughly 350 million copies of a single release, the biggest in history, sold in nearly every country on the planet. And Grand Theft Auto V sits at about 225 million — the fastest-selling entertainment product ever made, with more than $10 billion in revenue.

That’s the whole list. No fourth game has yet joined them.

The ones that came up just short

Plenty of giants cluster just below the line. Wii Sports (≈83 million) got a huge lift from being bundled with the Wii, but never quite cleared it. Red Dead Redemption 2 (≈82 million) is the best-selling game not in the club. Mario Kart 8 / Deluxe (≈80 million combined) and PUBG (≈75 million paid copies) round out the near-misses. Any one of them could nudge past 100 million eventually — but for now, they’re on the outside looking in.

Why Fortnite and friends don’t count

You might expect Fortnite here — it has something like 650 million registered players. But it’s free-to-play, so nobody “buys a copy”; it makes its money from in-game purchases. The same goes for other live-service blockbusters. This list is specifically about copies sold, which is why a paid game like Minecraft can rank above a game far more people have technically played. It’s two different ways of measuring success — units shifted versus bodies in the door.

Who’s next?

The obvious candidate is Grand Theft Auto VI, due in November 2026 and one of the most anticipated launches in entertainment history — many expect it to reach 100 million faster than anything before it. Beyond that, the bar keeps drifting upward as gaming grows: a milestone that once felt impossible now has a small but expanding membership.
