Why no two answers match

The honest answer is a range. There are 22 premium mainline games released on console and PC, from the WWII original in 2003 to Black Ops 7 in 2025. Add the free-to-play giants — Warzone and Call of Duty: Mobile — and most lists say 24. Add remasters and older spin-offs and you reach roughly 30; count every distinct platform version and the figure climbs past 40.

That spread is the whole story. Whether Warzone is “a game” or “a mode,” and whether a remaster counts as new, are judgement calls — so reputable sites land on different totals and all of them are defensible.

One franchise, several sub-series

Since 2005 a new mainline game has arrived almost every year, rotated between three lead studios — Treyarch, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer, with Raven and others assisting. They don’t make one continuous series but distinct strands: the grounded Modern Warfare games, the conspiracy-driven Black Ops line, the boots-on-ground WWII entries, and a short-lived jetpack-and-exosuit future era. Activision — and with it Call of Duty — is now owned by Microsoft, and recent mainline games arrive on Game Pass on day one.

The newest game — and what’s next

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 released on 14 November 2025, built by Treyarch and Raven. It is the first time the series has run two Black Ops games back to back, picking up the story from Black Ops 6 and Black Ops II in a futuristic 2035, with a co-op campaign and the return of round-based Zombies.

The annual machine rolls on: the 2026 entry is reported to be a new Modern Warfare from Infinity Ward, which would make it the 23rd premium mainline game.

Warzone, Mobile and the money

The free-to-play side is where the count gets blurriest — and where much of the money is. Warzone (2020) brought battle royale to the series and pulled in tens of millions of players; Call of Duty: Mobile (2019) has been downloaded more than half a billion times. Across all of it the franchise has sold over 500 million copies and remains one of the best-selling and highest-grossing in gaming, with much of the revenue now coming from battle passes and cosmetics rather than the boxed games themselves.

Frequently asked questions

How many Call of Duty games are there?
It depends what you count. There are 22 premium mainline games (2003 to Black Ops 7 in 2025), 24 if you add Warzone and Call of Duty: Mobile, around 30 with remasters and spin-offs, and 40+ counting every release and platform version — which is why different sources give different numbers.
What is the newest Call of Duty game?
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, released 14 November 2025 (Treyarch and Raven). It is set in 2035 and continues the Black Ops story; it launched on PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and on Game Pass from day one.
Is a new Call of Duty released every year?
Yes — the franchise has shipped a new mainline game almost every year since 2005. The 2026 entry is reported to be a new Modern Warfare from Infinity Ward.
How many studios make Call of Duty?
Three lead studios rotate the mainline games — Treyarch, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer — supported by Raven, Beenox, High Moon and others. Activision is now owned by Microsoft.
Is Warzone a separate game?
It is debated. Warzone (2020) is a free-to-play battle royale that ties into the mainline releases; some counts include it, others treat it as a mode, which is part of why the total is fuzzy.
Is there a mobile version?
Yes. Call of Duty: Mobile launched in 2019 and has been downloaded more than half a billion times; Warzone Mobile followed in 2024.
