How Many Resident Evil Games Are There?
There is no single right answer — it turns entirely on whether you count the remakes and spin-offs. The toggle below lets you decide, against the real release timeline.

Spin-offs (Outbreak, Revelations, the Chronicles light-gun games and others) aren’t listed individually — they’re what pushes the “+ Spin-offs” total to roughly 30.

The franchise that invented survival horror
When the original Resident Evil arrived in 1996, it didn’t just frighten players — it coined the phrase “survival horror.” Fixed camera angles and awkward “tank” controls turned every zombie into a genuine threat. Thirty years later the series has sold more than 170 million copies, Capcom’s best-selling property of all time.
Its 30th anniversary landed alongside Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline game, which released on 27 February 2026 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 — a dual-protagonist story led by newcomer Grace Ashcroft and series veteran Leon Kennedy.
The game that changed everything — RE4
It is hard to overstate Resident Evil 4 (2005). It threw out fixed cameras for an over-the-shoulder view, added laser-sighted aiming, contextual melee and a merchant economy, and effectively wrote the template for the modern third-person action game — Gears of War, Dead Space, Uncharted and The Last of Us all owe it a debt.
Its development was so fertile that a scrapped early concept became a different franchise entirely — Devil May Cry. And when Capcom released the RE4 remake in 2023, it managed the rare feat of reviewing even higher than the beloved original.

Capcom now runs two parallel tracks: new mainline games and ground-up remakes of the classics. Four remakes exist so far — the 2002 GameCube REmake, then RE2 (2019), RE3 (2020) and RE4 (2023) — and Capcom has signalled more are coming. Industry leakers point to a Code Veronica remake as the next likely announcement, with a Resident Evil Zero remake rumoured to follow, though neither is officially confirmed.
Layered on top are the spin-offs: the Outbreak online experiments, the Revelations pair, the on-rails Chronicles light-gun games and more. Count those and the total reaches roughly 30 — past 35 if you tally every distinct release across platforms.
