How Many Types of Clarinet Are There?

The clarinet family spans from a piccolo smaller than your forearm to a contrabass looped like a giant paperclip and nearly 9 feet tall. It is the only common woodwind with a cylindrical bore — and Mozart's most beloved concerto may have been misperformed for 200 years.

There are approximately 13 recognised types of clarinet in active use, plus several experimental and historical variants. The most common are the Bb soprano, A soprano, Eb soprano, bass clarinet and contrabass clarinet. The full family — from the tiny Ab piccolo to the Bb contrabass and experimental octocontrabass — spans a combined range of over 8 octaves, more than any other woodwind instrument family.

Note: Every single clarinet in this family uses a cylindrical bore — making the clarinet unique among woodwinds. Flutes, oboes, saxophones and recorders all use conical bores. This single design difference creates the clarinet's distinctive sound and its famous 'break' between registers.

The Instrument That Changed Music

THE INVENTION (~1700): Around 1700, a Nuremberg instrument maker named Johann Christoph Denner modified a French folk instrument called the chalumeau by adding a register key — a small hole covered by a pad that allows the instrument to play in a higher register. This seemingly simple addition created an entirely new instrument. The name 'clarinet' — from the Italian 'clarino' meaning trumpet — was given because the instrument's upper register resembled the sound of a high trumpet.

THE CYLINDRICAL BORE MYSTERY: The clarinet's defining characteristic is invisible: its bore (the internal diameter) is cylindrical — the same width from top to bottom. Every other common woodwind instrument uses a conical bore that widens toward the bell. This difference has profound acoustic consequences. A cylindrical bore causes the instrument to overblow at the twelfth (an octave plus a fifth) rather than the octave like all other instruments. This creates the clarinet's famous 'break' — the register gap that every student struggles to master — and gives it a unique, hollow, woody lower register called the chalumeau register, completely unlike any other instrument on earth.

THE RANGE: The clarinet has a wider playable range than any other woodwind instrument — approximately three and a half octaves on a standard Bb clarinet. The lowest notes have a deep, hollow, almost organ-like quality. The highest notes can pierce through a full orchestra. No other single instrument spans such dramatically different tonal colours.

THE REED: Unlike the oboe and bassoon which use double reeds, the clarinet uses a single reed — a thin piece of cane attached to the mouthpiece. The reed vibrates against the mouthpiece window to create sound. The choice of reed (strength, brand, cut) is one of the most personal decisions a clarinetist makes — professional players test hundreds of reeds to find ones they trust, and carry spares of their best reeds everywhere.

THE MATERIAL: Professional clarinets are made from African blackwood (also called grenadilla) — one of the hardest and densest woods on earth. A new wooden clarinet must be 'broken in' gradually — played for short periods at first to allow the wood to adjust to moisture without cracking. Student instruments are typically ABS plastic or resin.

The Mozart Mystery — 200 Years of Misperformance

Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major (K. 622) is one of the most beloved concertos ever written — a masterpiece of the classical era. But for over 200 years, it was performed on the wrong instrument.

Mozart wrote the concerto for the basset clarinet — a specialized instrument with an extended lower range that descends to the note C below the standard clarinet's lowest note. The basset clarinet was popular in Vienna during Mozart's time, and Mozart loved its warm, mellow tone. He wrote the concerto specifically to showcase the instrument's unique low register.

But after Mozart's death in 1791, the basset clarinet fell out of favour. By the 1800s, it had virtually disappeared from orchestras. Musicians faced a problem: they had this beautiful concerto, but no one played the instrument it was written for. So they did what seemed logical — they transposed the low passages up an octave and performed it on the standard Bb soprano clarinet.

This worked, technically. The notes were playable. But it completely changed the character of the piece. The warm, woody, almost vocal quality of the basset clarinet's low register — the very thing Mozart was writing for — was lost. Instead, performers played those passages an octave higher, in a completely different tonal colour.

It wasn't until the 1950s that musicians began reconstructing basset clarinets based on historical examples. When the Clarinet Concerto was finally performed on the instrument Mozart actually wrote for, audiences heard it as Mozart intended for the first time in 160 years. The difference is profound — the low passages have a haunting, intimate quality that the transposed version completely misses.

Today, both versions are performed — the original on basset clarinet, and the transposed version on standard clarinet. But if you ever hear the concerto and notice the lower passages have an unusually warm, almost vocal quality, you're hearing Mozart's original vision.
