How Many Types of French Horn Are There?

The chart that explains the double horn
Pick a written note (the horn is in F — what you read is a fifth higher than what you hear). Most notes have two fingerings, one on each side of the double horn. The thumb trigger switches between them. Below C5, players favour the F side for tone. From C5 up, they switch to the Bb side for security.
The double horn's sounding pitch is identical regardless of which side you play — only the fingering changes. Many notes have additional alternates pros use for slur stability; this chart shows the standard preferred fingering. Synth tone is approximate.

The French horn isn't French
The horn does have a French ancestor. In the 17th century, French aristocrats hunted on horseback with brass cor de chasse — coiled hunting horns, valveless, with no chromatic capability, used to signal across a forest. That horn made its way into Lully's operas in the 1660s and from there into the orchestra. English speakers picked up the name "French horn" along the way.
But almost every modern improvement to the instrument is German. The orchestral horn was developed in Saxony and Thuringia through the 18th century. Hand-stopping — the technique that finally made the valveless horn chromatic — was formalised in Dresden by the Bohemian player Anton Joseph Hampel around 1750. Rotary valves were perfected in Germany in the 1830s. The double horn that defines modern playing was patented in Erfurt in 1897 by Fritz Kruspe.
In 1971, the International Horn Society officially recommended dropping "French" and calling the instrument simply "the horn." The recommendation has stuck in academic and professional contexts but never reached the wider public — which is why this page is titled the way it is.

The 1897 invention that fixed the horn
For most of the 19th century, the horn was a known intonation nightmare. The F horn had the warm tone everyone wanted, but its tubing was so long that the high partials sat right next to each other — hitting the right note in the upper register required hair-trigger precision. The Bb horn, pitched higher, had cleaner partials in the high register but a thinner tone the orchestral world didn't love.
In 1897, the Erfurt instrument maker Fritz Kruspe — building on earlier work by the player and pedagogue Edmund Gumpert — combined the two into a single instrument. A fourth valve, operated by the left thumb, diverts the air from the F-side tubing into the Bb-side tubing. The player still reads music in F, still uses the same three valves with the same fingers, and instantly has access to whichever side gives the cleaner attack on any given note.
The widget above is the consequence. Most notes in the standard orchestral range have a fingering on both sides. Below C5 the F side carries the traditional horn warmth. The hand inside the bell is doing real work
The right hand stays inside the bell, cupped, for the entire performance. To a non-player it looks decorative. It is not. Around 1750 in Dresden, the Bohemian horn player Anton Joseph Hampel realised that pushing the hand further into the bell lowered the pitch by a measurable amount, and pulling it out raised it. Working with the instrument maker Johann Werner, he developed a system — hand-stopping — that let a valveless horn fill in the chromatic notes between the natural harmonic series.
That made the horn properly chromatic 60 years before valves arrived. It is also why every major Classical horn part — including Mozart's four concertos and the great Romantic orchestral writing — was originally composed for an instrument whose chromatic notes came from changing hand position, not from pressing buttons.
Valves replaced hand-stopping for ordinary chromatic playing, but the hand stayed. It shapes the tone (open hand = bright, cupped hand = warm), it dampens and amplifies dynamically, and it produces the special stopped horn effect when the bell is fully sealed — a brassy, metallic, slightly threatening sound used as a colour by Mahler, Strauss, Stravinsky and every horn-aware composer since.
Mozart's horn concertos were written as practical jokes
Mozart wrote four horn concertos between 1782 and 1791 for his friend Joseph Leutgeb, a Salzburg horn player who had also lent Mozart money. The concertos are still the most-played in the entire horn repertoire. The manuscripts are also some of the most personally annotated music Mozart ever wrote.
All over the autograph score of the Horn Concerto K.495, Mozart added in red, green and black ink: "Adagio — Bravo, signor asino" (Bravo, sir donkey). "To you, signor Leutgeb — ass, ox and fool". "Take a breath now, you poor wretch". A whole running commentary, half affection and half teasing. Leutgeb apparently took it all in good humour and kept playing. The published modern editions clean the score, but the original manuscripts — with the insults intact — survive in libraries in the Czech Republic and the UK.
The marching French horn is not a French horn
The instrument marching bands call a "French horn" is almost always a mellophone. It is pitched in F like the orchestral horn and reads the same music, but its bell faces forward, it uses piston valves (not rotary), and it is held trumpet-style. The reason it exists is acoustic: the orchestral horn has a rear-facing bell, which sends almost all its sound away from the audience — fine in a concert hall, useless on a football field.
A horn player asked to march will almost always switch to the mellophone for outdoor work and switch back for everything else.

Why the horn sounds the way it sounds
Two design choices give the horn its tone. The first is the mouthpiece shape. Trumpet and trombone mouthpieces are cup-shaped — flat-bottomed, with a sharp internal step — which gives a bright, projecting tone. The horn mouthpiece is funnel-shaped: smooth, narrow, no sharp step. The sound has none of the trumpet's brilliance and almost none of its edge.
The second is the tube length and coil. A modern F horn has about 3.7 m of tubing, almost two and a half times what the trumpet has. To make that manageable, the tubing is wound around itself in a tight spiral. All that tubing, plus a wide bell flare facing backward into the player's right hand, plus the soft funnel mouthpiece, is what produces the unmistakable round, blendable horn sound.
