How many calories does the brain use per day?
An adult brain burns roughly 300 kilocalories a day — about a fifth of everything your body spends at rest, for an organ that is only 2% of your body weight. The catch: that number barely changes whether you spend the day sitting an exam or staring at a wall — and if you live in Australia, New Zealand or the EU, your food isn't even labelled in calories. It's roughly 1,255 kilojoules.
People reach this question expecting a lever — that hard study or a tense chess game quietly drains the tank. It doesn't really work that way. The brain is a steady-state engine that runs hot all day, and the gap between idling and full concentration is surprisingly thin. What the brain is doing
The baseline: about 300 kcal a day just to keep the network idling. Every other activity here is measured against this.

300 of what, exactly?
The first wrinkle is the unit. A food-label "Calorie" is really a kilocalorie — 1,000 of the small calories from a chemistry textbook. So the brain's ~300 daily Calories are 300,000 small calories, or about 1,255 kilojoules. One kcal equals exactly 4.184 kJ.
Which one you see depends on geography. Food Standards Australia New Zealand mandates energy on packaged-food labels in kilojoules, so an Australian reads the brain's draw as roughly 1,255 kJ. EU Regulation No 1169/2011 requires both units side by side, while US FDA labels show only "Calories." The biology is identical everywhere — only the scoreboard changes.
The brain idles hot
Most of that 300 kcal is spent before you think a single deliberate thought. Neuroscientist Marcus Raichle popularised the term "the brain's dark energy" for the constant background activity that runs whether you are focused, resting or asleep. By most estimates this intrinsic upkeep accounts for the large majority of the brain's energy bill.
The single biggest line item is the sodium–potassium pump. Every neuron holds a precise electrical charge across its membrane, ready to fire; after each impulse, ATP-powered pumps reset that charge. That maintenance — keeping billions of cells primed — is what eats the calories, not conscious reasoning.
So thinking hard doesn't burn it off?
Barely. A demanding task does raise glucose and oxygen use in the specific regions doing the work, but the whole-brain total moves only a few percent — a handful of extra kilocalories per hour. You cannot study, calculate or worry your way into a meaningful calorie deficit.
The chess counter-example is real but misread: grandmasters do lose noticeable weight across multi-week tournaments. Physiologists attribute it to the stress response — elevated cortisol and adrenaline, a faster heart rate, disrupted sleep and simply eating less under pressure — rather than to the calorie price of the thinking itself.
The brains that really are expensive: children's
The adult 20% figure hides a dramatic developmental story. A 2014 study by Christopher Kuzawa and colleagues at Northwestern University, published in PNAS, found that brain energy use peaks at around age four to five — when it can consume close to 43% of the body's resting energy. The study linked that spike to the well-known slowdown in children's physical growth: the body throttles back so the brain can be wired.
What 300 kcal actually buys
Under normal conditions the brain runs almost entirely on glucose — on the order of 120 grams a day. It is adaptable, though: during fasting or a ketogenic diet the liver makes ketone bodies, and the brain can draw a large share of its fuel from them instead. Either way the continuous power is about 20 watts — roughly a dim LED bulb left on around the clock.
