The wattage printed on a TV’s spec sticker is its power rating — the maximum it could draw under peak load. Real-world “on” consumption is almost always well below it. In a large study of measured sets, modern TVs averaged about 58.6 watts when on, while the box ratings often read 150–250 W. The gap is the difference between “what it can pull in a worst case” and “what it sips during your average evening.”
Standby is even less alarming than people fear. A modern smart TV draws under 1 watt when off — typically a fraction of a watt to keep its Wi-Fi and remote sensor alive. Over a year that “phantom” drain costs a dollar or two at most, which is why unplugging the TV saves far less than unplugging, say, an old set-top box or a games console left in a high-power rest mode.
Size and panel type do most of the work
Two things set the baseline: how big the screen is, and what technology lights it. Size matters more than people expect because power tracks screen area, not the diagonal. A 65-inch TV isn’t 18% hungrier than a 55-inch (the difference in diagonal) — it’s closer to 35–60% hungrier, because the lit area is far larger.
On panel type, the rule of thumb has flipped over the years. LED/LCD sets use a single backlight and are very efficient. OLED screens light each pixel individually — they’re stunning, and on dark scenes can even use less, but on bright, full-screen content they draw more than an equivalent LED. QLED sits in between. Old plasma TVs are the real hogs: a 2000s plasma could pull 300–500 W, two to three times a modern panel the same size.
The one setting that actually cuts your bill
If you want to use less power, ignore standby and go straight for brightness. The backlight is the single biggest consumer in the set, so turning it down has an almost one-to-one effect on consumption. Dropping the backlight or brightness by 20–30% — or switching on the TV’s automatic/eco brightness mode, which dims to suit the room — can cut power use by a similar amount, often without you noticing the difference in a normally lit room.
After that, the levers are obvious but small: fewer hours, a smaller screen next time you buy, and turning off motion-smoothing and peak-brightness “vivid” picture modes that crank the backlight. HDR content also pushes the backlight to maximum, so an HDR movie genuinely costs a little more to watch than the same film in standard range. None of it is dramatic — which is rather the point.
The TV is rarely the thing worth worrying about
People fixate on the television because it’s big, visible and on every evening — but at roughly $15–30 a year, it’s one of the cheapest things in the house to run. The real money is in the silent, always-on loads: an electric water heater, an old fridge, air conditioning, a poorly insulated home. A single hour of a space heater can use more electricity than a full evening of television.
That’s worth keeping in mind whenever an article tells you to unplug your devices to “save the planet.” Phantom TV drain is real, but it’s rounding-error money.
