How Many Numbers Are on a Roulette Wheel?

37 or 38A European wheel has 37 (0–36). An American wheel adds a second green 00, making 38.

Betting red feels like a 50/50 coin flip. It isn’t. There are 18 red pockets out of 37 — the green zero tips every even-money bet in the casino’s favour, and that single pocket is the whole game.

37, 38 — and where the edge hides

The European (and French) wheel carries the numbers 1–36 plus a single green 0: 37 pockets. The American wheel keeps all of those and adds a second green 00: 38 pockets.

A win on red pays even money, as if the odds were 50/50. But there are 18 reds against 18 blacks and the green zero — so your real chance is 18/37. That mismatch hands the casino a 2.70% edge on a single-zero wheel, and the extra 00 doubles it to 5.26% in America. Same game, very different long-run cost.

Why the numbers are scrambled

On the table the numbers run in tidy rows, but on the wheel they are deliberately jumbled — tap Trace 0–36 above and watch the highlight leap across the rim. The order is engineered so reds and blacks alternate, high and low numbers are spread evenly, and odds and evens are balanced around the whole circle. That makes any single sector a fair mix, so a player cannot simply bet “one side” of the wheel and gain anything.

The systems players use to beat it

Countless betting systems promise to crack roulette. They change when and how much you stake — never the odds of the spin itself, which has no memory of the last one.

Martingale
How: Double your bet after every loss; one win recovers everything.
Why it fails: Table limits and a finite bankroll mean one long red streak wipes you out. Edge unchanged.
Reverse Martingale (Paroli)
How: Double after wins instead, riding hot streaks.
Why it fails: Streaks end exactly when you cannot predict — you give the run back.
D'Alembert
How: Raise one unit after a loss, drop one after a win.
Why it fails: Gentler ride, same negative expectation per spin.
Fibonacci
How: Stake follows 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8… after losses.
Why it fails: Slower bankroll death, not a way around the zero.
Labouchère
How: Cross numbers off a list as you win; add when you lose.
Why it fails: A losing run makes the list — and the bets — balloon past the limit.

There are also genuine wheel sector bets that map the physical layout rather than the table: Voisins du Zéro (the 17 pockets around the green zero), Tiers du Cylindre (12 pockets on the far side) and the leftover Orphelins. They let you back a whole region of the wheel in one bet — but each pocket still pays at odds set below its true chance, so the edge rides along unchanged.

How casinos maximise their take

The edge only pays off if you keep playing, so almost everything at the table is built to raise the number of spins you sit through:

  • Keep the wheel moving. A brisk table runs well over 50 spins an hour. More spins means the 2.70% (or 5.26%) is applied more times — the grind is in the pace.
  • Rotate the croupiers. Dealers are swapped roughly every 20–30 minutes. It keeps them fast and alert, disrupts any unconscious “dealer signature” that advantage players try to read, and limits the chance of collusion.
  • Table limits. Maximum bets exist largely to break doubling systems like the Martingale before they can recover a long losing run.
  • No clocks, free drinks, easy chips. Everything nudges you to play longer and feel the stakes less — both of which feed the same edge.

Quick questions

How many numbers on a European wheel?
37 — the numbers 1 to 36 plus a single green 0.
How many on an American wheel?
38 — the same 1 to 36 and 0, plus a second green 00, which is what doubles the house edge.
Is red or black more likely?
Neither. There are 18 of each. The green zero(s) are why even-money bets still lose money over time.
Does any betting system beat roulette?
No system changes the per-spin odds. They alter your staking pattern only; the negative expectation is fixed by the zero.
