How many numbers are in the Powerball lottery?
You pick six numbers — but they come from two separate machines: 5 white balls from 1 to 69, plus 1 red Powerball from 1 to 26. That two-drum split is exactly why the jackpot odds are 1 in 292,201,338.

Six numbers, two different drums
The reason “how many numbers” trips people up is that Powerball isn’t one pool of balls — it’s two. Five numbers are drawn from a drum of 69 white balls, and a sixth, the Powerball, is drawn from a completely separate drum of 26 red balls. The same red number can repeat as one of your whites because they live in different machines.

Where Powerball came from
Powerball launched in 1992, replacing an earlier multi-state game called Lotto*America. Its first draw, on 22 April 1992, offered a $2 million jackpot on a 5/45 + 1/45 matrix. The big innovation was structural: it was built around two separate drums, a “double matrix” that let operators tune the white and red pools independently — the template nearly every modern jackpot game now copies. It’s run by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL).
The pools have been resized many times. The current 5/69 + 1/26 format arrived on 7 October 2015, deliberately lengthening the odds so jackpots roll over further and climb higher. Today Powerball is played in 45 states plus Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with draws on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays (the Monday draw was added in August 2021).
All nine ways to win
The jackpot is only one of nine prize tiers. Match just the red Powerball and you still win $4; the overall odds of winning something are about 1 in 25. These are the base prizes, before the optional Power Play multiplier.

The biggest wins on record
Longer odds mean rarer but enormous jackpots. The all-time record is the $2.04 billion drawn in November 2022 on a single ticket sold in Altadena, California; the winner, Edwin Castro, took a cash option of about $997.6 million. In December 2025, a single ticket in Arkansas claimed $1.817 billion on Christmas Eve — the second-largest in history.
Before those, the January 2016 draw made history as the first ten-figure jackpot: $1.586 billion, split three ways between winners in California, Florida and Tennessee, who each banked about $528.8 million. And in 2019, Wisconsin’s Manuel Franco took $768.4 million on one ticket.
