40 lengths in a 25-metre pool · 20 in a 50-metre pool. But the question hides two ambiguities — pool length, and whether you mean length (one way) or lap (down and back). And the water itself matters more than you'd think.

Lap vs length — and why nobody agrees
Two layers of ambiguity sit underneath "how many laps in a kilometre". The first is pool length: short-course pools (25 m) make a kilometre 40 lengths; long-course (50 m) cuts that to 20. Most gyms run short course; municipal and Olympic pools run long. The second is terminology. In competitive swimming, a length is one trip across the pool, and a lap is down-and-back — two lengths. So 40 lengths in a 25 m pool is technically 20 laps. Casual swimmers swap the words freely, fitness apps usually count lengths regardless of what the button says, and watch face displays vary by brand.
US masters swimming makes things worse by adding distance ambiguity. The "swim mile" in American pools is 1650 yards — roughly 1508 m, not the runner's mile of 1609 m. In Europe and at international meets, the "metric mile" in swimming is 1500 m, which is the actual race contested at the Olympics. If somebody mentions swimming "a mile", always ask which one.
For this page we'll use length as the default unit because that's what pool counters track and what the calculator above outputs. Where lap matters, we'll say lap.
Why short course feels easier (and is, slightly)
A flip-turn isn't just a direction change. Coming off the wall, a swimmer pushes off at higher speed than they can produce by stroking — typically 2.3 m/s push versus 1.5-1.8 m/s freestyle — and then dolphin-kicks underwater for up to 15 metres before surfacing. Each turn delivers a one-to-two second momentum boost. Across 1 km, a 25 m pool gives you 39 of these; a 50 m pool gives 19. Multiply out and you can lose 30-40 seconds in a 1500 m race simply from having fewer walls.
That's why short-course world records are systematically faster than long-course ones over the same distance. Florian Wellbrock's short-course 1500 m record (14:06.88) sits about 24 seconds clear of the long-course mark — almost entirely a function of the extra walls. The underlying swimmer speed isn't dramatically different; the wall physics is.
For amateurs the gap is similar but felt the other way round: long-course pools feel punishing because there's nowhere to rest. The breath-by-breath rhythm of a 25 m pool — kick, kick, turn — gets replaced by uninterrupted swimming. Plenty of confident 25 m swimmers find their first 50 m pool genuinely difficult, even though they're physically capable. That's not weakness; it's the absence of free momentum.

What happens if you try to swim 1 km in the Dead Sea
The Dead Sea sits at the lowest land elevation on Earth (about 430 m below sea level) and holds the most saline water of any large body — roughly 34% salt by mass, ten times saltier than the ocean. That salinity drives the density to 1.240 g/mL, about 24% denser than your body. The buoyancy difference isn't subtle; it changes what swimming is.
In normal pool water you sink slightly without effort — body density (~1.010 g/mL) is just above water density (1.000), so unsupported you drift toward the bottom. In sea water (1.025) you float marginally. In the Dead Sea your shoulders, chest and hips sit clear of the surface. The freestyle stroke depends on the catch phase — your hand entering and pulling water from in front of you down past your hip. If your shoulders are above the surface, your hand never engages water properly. Most attempts at freestyle end up as a flailing slap across the top.
Backstroke works, sort of. Your face stays clear of the water, which matters more than usual: Dead Sea brine burns the eyes instantly and is lethal if inhaled in any quantity (the concentration draws fluid out of the lungs). Sea swimmers there use sealed goggles, plug their nose, and stay strictly horizontal. A modified slow backstroke or sidestroke is the practical option.
Despite all of that, the Dead Sea Swim has been held annually since 2016 — a 17 km crossing from Jordan to Israel. Swimmers wear full-face masks, snorkels and rigid-frame goggles. Times are slow, completions are an achievement of endurance and skin protection rather than speed. Most participants describe the experience as more like a long, salty crawl than swimming.

The shape of a swimmer
Tall, long-torsoed, surprisingly heavy. Swimmers don't look like runners. Here's why.
Elite swimmers tend to be tall (190+ cm for men, 180+ for women) with disproportionately long arms, long torsos, and slightly shorter-than-expected legs. The mechanics reward this. Each stroke is a lever: more arm length means more water moved per pull, and a longer torso means less drag-inducing rotation as your hips rise and fall through breath. Big hands and big feet act as paddles and flippers. Phelps' size-14 feet have been measured as flexing into 90° plantar flexion — they propel water like fins.
Body fat is the counterintuitive piece. Elite sprint and middle-distance swimmers carry slightly more body fat than elite runners (typically 10-15% for men, 16-22% for women, versus single digits for elite marathoners). Some of this is the metabolic demand of training in cold pools, but some is genuinely useful: a slightly higher body-fat percentage lowers body density toward the buoyancy sweet spot. The body floats more naturally, hips ride higher, drag drops. The drowning death of competitive swimmers is essentially zero precisely because their build is too buoyant to sink without active effort.
Compare to Eliud Kipchoge — 168 cm, 52 kg, near-zero body fat, short arms. That body would be miserable in a pool. The same is true the other way: Phelps would struggle to run a sub-2:30 marathon. Body shape sorts athletes into sports as much as training does.
Choosing a stroke for 1 km
Freestyle dominates distance swimming for good reason. The other strokes have specific use cases.
Calorie figures are MET-based estimates for a 70 kg adult (Ainsworth 2011). Real burn varies with technique efficiency — newer swimmers waste more energy fighting drag.

For a confident recreational swimmer, 18-22 minutes is typical. Competitive amateurs (masters swimmers, triathletes) hit 13-15 minutes. Average gym swimmers land around 20-25 minutes. World-record pace is ~9:40. Beginners doing breaststroke can take 30+ minutes — and that's fine.
Is 1 km of swimming equivalent to a 5 km run?
Roughly, in cardiovascular load and calorie burn. A 70 kg adult swimming 1 km of moderate freestyle burns ~550 kcal in ~20 minutes; running 5 km burns ~350-450 kcal in ~25-30 minutes. Swimming is denser exercise per minute. The 4:1 ratio (swimming distance × 4 ≈ running distance) is a useful rule of thumb for triathletes balancing training load.
Why are short-course world records faster than long-course ones?
Walls. Each flip-turn produces a 1-2 second momentum boost, and underwater dolphin-kicks coming off the wall hit speeds higher than swimming itself. Short-course pools (25 m) have nearly twice as many turns per kilometre as long-course (50 m) ones, so the cumulative time savings add up. The men's 1500 m short-course record sits about 24 seconds faster than the long-course mark.
Does saltwater really make swimming easier?
Slightly, on the buoyancy front. Sea water (1.025 g/mL) is 2.5% denser than fresh water, so your body floats marginally higher and the hips don't sink as much — that reduces drag. But waves, currents and salt drag against your skin and suit usually outweigh the gain. Pool swims remain the fastest medium.
What's the deal with the "swim mile"?
It depends where you are. In US masters swimming, the "mile" is 1650 yards (1508.76 m). At international meets the "metric mile" is 1500 m exactly. Neither matches the runner's mile (1609.34 m). The calculator above shows lengths for both, so you can pick whichever your local pool uses.
Can a fitness watch count my laps accurately?
Generally yes — modern Garmin, Apple Watch and Coros devices use accelerometer patterns to detect wall pushes and direction changes. Accuracy is best in standard 25 m or 50 m pools and worst in unusual lengths, mixed-stroke sets, or open water. Most apps default to counting lengths regardless of what they call them on screen, so check the unit before trusting the number.
