How Many Animals Start With Each Letter?
There is no single right answer — it depends entirely on the list you count. But one pattern never changes: the alphabet is wildly lopsided. Letters like S and C overflow, while Q, U, X and Y scrape together a handful between them. Tap any letter below and watch it happen.
A — 10 animals
Counts are "in this collection". There is no official total for any letter — see why below.
Why there is no single correct number
"How many animals start with N?" sounds like it should have an answer the way "how many days in May?" does. It doesn’t — and for three solid reasons. First, scientists have formally described roughly 2.16 million species (the Catalogue of Life’s running total), and most have no common English name at all, so they never get filed under a letter. Second, the letter depends on the name you choose: a puma is a P, a cougar a C and a mountain lion an M — same cat, three letters. Third, common names change with language entirely. So any count is really a count of one particular list.
That is why this page is built around an explorer rather than a number. Pick the list you care about — every mammal, just the birds, only the ones a child would recognise — and the total is whatever that list says. The honest answer to "how many" is "how many do you want to count?"
The empty end of the alphabet
Four letters do almost all the struggling — and it has little to do with animals and everything to do with English spelling.
The hardest of all. Barely any English word starts with X, so the only real entries are the xerus, the x-ray tetra, the xenopus frog and Xantus’s hummingbird.
A near-total dead end beyond quail. The crowd-pleasers are the quokka, the quoll and the resplendent quetzal — three of which come from Australia and the Americas.
The uakari, the urial, the sea urchin and the umbrellabird — and then the well runs dry. None are household names, which is half the fun.
Yak does the heavy lifting. Past it you reach the yabby, the yellowhammer and the yellowjacket, and that is more or less the list.
The crowded letters
At the other extreme, a few letters are stuffed. In this collection the busiest are S, C, A, B. It is no accident: S and C begin a huge share of English nouns generally, so they pull in everything from sharks, seals and sloths to crabs, cobras and chameleons. The lopsidedness you see across the A–Z grid is really a map of the English language, with the animals just along for the ride.
Try this: tap S, then jump to X. The list goes from more than a dozen down to 4. That cliff is the whole story of this page.
Frequently asked questions
How many animals start with the letter N?
It depends on the list. In this explorer there are 7 — narwhal, numbat, nyala, newt, nightingale, nuthatch and nautilus. A full encyclopaedia would list far more; a children's book far fewer. There is no single official figure for any letter.
Which letter has the fewest animals?
In English common names, the thin end of the alphabet is Q, U, X and Y. Here they hold just 4, 4, 4 and 4 animals each — because very few English words begin with those letters at all.
What animals start with X?
Almost none, which is what makes "X" the classic puzzle. The real ones are the xerus (an African ground squirrel), the x-ray tetra (a see-through fish), the xenopus (African clawed frog) and Xantus’s hummingbird.
Is there a correct number of animals per letter?
No. Counts shift with language, with whether you use common or scientific names, and with how finely you split species. That ambiguity is exactly why a fixed "how many" answer is impossible — the explorer lets you set your own list instead.

Ask "how many animals start with N" and the only honest reply is a question back: which list? The alphabet doesn’t sort animals — it sorts the words we happen to call them.
