Persin — the toxin that barely touches dogs
Avocado contains persin, a natural fungicide found throughout the plant — highest in the leaves, skin and pit, lower in the flesh. It's genuinely dangerous to some animals: birds, rabbits, horses and ruminants like cattle and goats can become seriously ill or die from it. Guacamole is worse than avocado
If your dog steals guacamole, the avocado is the least of your worries. Guac is usually loaded with onion and garlic — both genuinely toxic to dogs, capable of damaging red blood cells — plus salt and sometimes lime. Those add-ins are far more dangerous to a dog than the avocado base. The same goes for avocado toast topped with onion, garlic or smoked salt. Keep both to yourself.
So should you give your dog avocado?
There's no need to panic if your dog snatched a bit of flesh off the floor — monitor them for the next day and they'll most likely be fine. But as a deliberate treat, most vets say the risks (pit, fat, the temptation of the skin) outweigh a benefit your dog can get more safely from a slice of apple or a few blueberries.
