How the 400 Word Game works
The game says a word out loud and shows a set of pictures; you tap the one that matches. Get it right and the next word plays. That is the whole loop, and it is deliberately simple, because the skill being trained is hearing English, not reading it. The words are spoken by your browser's own speech engine, so it works offline once the page has loaded and there is nothing to install.
The vocabulary is adult, everyday English: 391 words across 18 categories such as the home, food, work, travel, health and the natural world. That makes it a step up from the picture-book words in the first Listen Game and a useful drill for anyone preparing to live, study or work in an English-speaking country. Play in short bursts; a few minutes a day beats an hour once a week for listening practice.
