The original game drew each day’s solution from a hand-filtered list of about 2,309 words — even though you’re allowed to guess from roughly 13,000. There’s a neat reason for the gap.

Two lists, not one
The puzzle quietly runs on two separate word lists. The bigger one is the guess list — roughly 13,000 valid five-letter words you’re permitted to type, which is why an obscure word is usually accepted as input. The smaller one is the answer list: about 2,309 words that the game would ever actually pick as the solution.
The reason for trimming it is simple fairness. When the game was built, the creator’s partner went through the giant dictionary and filtered out the rare, archaic and unguessable words, leaving a list of everyday words most players would recognise. So you can guess a strange word for information, but you’ll never be asked to land on one.
Why 2,309 isn’t quite the whole story now
That 2,309 figure describes the original list. After the game became a global craze, The New York Times bought it in early 2022 (for a reported seven-figure sum) and kept it free. At first it ran on the original code, with only a handful of obscure or sensitive words removed.
Then, from late 2022, the Times handed the daily word to a human editor. Since then the answers have been curated rather than read straight off a fixed list — taken out of their original order, occasionally repeated, and topped up with brand-new words. So today there isn’t really one static “answer list” of a fixed length; 2,309 is best understood as the size of the list the game started with.
A little Wordle maths
The numbers have some fun in them. At one word per day, a list of 2,309 words is enough for over six years of daily puzzles before you’d need to start repeating. Only about 18% of the words you can type are ever eligible to be the answer — roughly one in six. And words with repeated letters tend to be trickier for players, because a careful opening guess gives away less about them. It’s also why analytically-minded players favour vowel-rich opening words that test as many common letters as possible in one go.
Where it came from
Wordle was made by software engineer Josh Wardle — the name is a pun on his own. He first sketched a version back in 2013, then rebuilt it during the pandemic as a private game for his partner, who loved word puzzles. They shared it with family, it leaked out to the wider world in October 2021, and by January 2022 it had gone from a few dozen players to millions. The design owes a clear debt to the old code-breaking game Mastermind: six guesses, coloured feedback, one hidden solution.
