How Many Presidents Has Indonesia Had?

For the world's fourth most populous country, the answer is strikingly small: just eight presidents since Indonesia declared independence in 1945. The reason is that the first two — Sukarno and Suharto — held the office for 53 years between them. Only after Suharto fell in 1998 did the presidency start to change hands at a normal pace. The current president, the former general Prabowo Subianto, took office on 20 October 2024.

8presidents since independence in 1945
Correct as of June 2026.
Why so few for so many people?
Eight presidents in 80 years, for 280 million people. Switch the rule to see why.
8Presidents since 1945
Just eight people have been president of Indonesia, from Sukarno to Prabowo Subianto — remarkably few for a nation of more than 280 million.

Two men, half a century

The reason Indonesia has had so few presidents is simple: its first two each ruled for a generation. Sukarno, who proclaimed independence from the Dutch in 1945, stayed in power for 22 years, steering the country into an era he called "Guided Democracy." When he was eased aside in the mid-1960s, his successor settled in for even longer.

Suharto governed for 31 years — the "New Order" — an authoritarian period of rapid development and tight control. Between them, Sukarno and Suharto held the presidency for 53 years, more than half of independent Indonesia's entire history. That is why a country of over 280 million people has had only eight presidents: for decades, the office almost never changed hands.

Reformasi: four presidents in six years

Then the dam broke. When the Asian financial crisis and mass protests forced Suharto to resign in 1998, Indonesia swung from one extreme to the other. In the six years that followed — the reformasi, or reform, era — the country churned through four presidents, none of whom served a full term.

Suharto's deputy B. J. Habibie lasted about a year and opened the door to free elections. The cleric Abdurrahman Wahid was chosen in 1999 but removed by the assembly within two years. Megawati Sukarnoputri, Sukarno's daughter and Indonesia's first woman president, took over until 2004. After decades of two-man rule, the office suddenly could not stay still.

The full list, in order

All eight from Sukarno to Prabowo Subianto. The list is short, but the spans are long: the first two names alone cover 53 of these years, before the reformasi era opened the office up after 1998.

Direct elections — and a return to the generals

Stability returned with a new rule. In 2004, Indonesians for the first time directly elected their president; before that, the People's Consultative Assembly had chosen. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono won that first direct vote and served two full terms, as did his successor Joko Widodo — "Jokowi" — a furniture businessman turned mayor whose rise broke from the country's pattern of generals and dynasts.

The 2024 election brought the military background back. Prabowo Subianto, a former army general and Jokowi's defence minister — and once Suharto's son-in-law — won the presidency and was sworn in on 20 October 2024, with Jokowi's son Gibran as his vice-president. He is the third Indonesian president to come from the armed forces, after Suharto and Yudhoyono.

How much power is in the job?

Indonesia's presidency is a strong executive over a vast, diverse nation — reined in now by a firm two-term limit born from decades of one-man rule.

How much power does the president actually have?
The title is the easy part. The real measure is how hard the holder is to remove.
Head of state too?
Yes. The Indonesian president is both head of state and head of government, and supreme commander of the armed forces.
How they get the job
Directly elected by the people since 2004, on a joint ticket with a vice-president. Before that, the People's Consultative Assembly chose the president.
Length of term
Five years, renewable once — a maximum of ten years. The term limit, introduced after Suharto, is now firmly observed.
Can be sacked mid-term?
By the assembly through an impeachment process; Abdurrahman Wahid was removed this way in 2001.
Control of parliament
Rarely outright. Indonesia's many parties mean presidents govern through broad coalitions, even when personally popular.
The Indonesian presidency is a powerful executive over the world's fourth-largest population and largest Muslim-majority democracy. Its modern guardrail is the two-term limit — the direct answer to an era when two men held the office for 53 years between them.
In office now: Prabowo Subianto (Gerindra)
Sworn in on 20 October 2024 as the eighth president, after a career as an army general and as Jokowi's defence minister. His vice-president is Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi's son.

Eight presidents for 280 million people — because for 53 years the answer was only ever two names, and Indonesia has spent every decade since making sure it never is again.
