Eleven on the field — but which eleven?
The on-field rule is simple: eleven players per team, so 22 on every snap. What’s unusual is that those eleven are almost entirely swapped out depending on the situation. When a team has the ball, its offense is on. When it doesn’t, the defense takes the field — a completely different eleven. And on kicks and punts, a third group, special teams, runs on. A star quarterback and a star cornerback might share a sideline for three hours and never be on the grass at the same time.

To feed three units, an NFL team carries a 53-man active roster during the season, plus a 16-player practice squad in reserve. On game day, only 48 can dress and play (and that 48 is allowed only if at least eight are offensive linemen — otherwise it drops to 47). The rest sit as “inactives.” So the honest answer to “how many players” spans from 11 on the field to 53 on the books, depending which line you’re asking about.
The two-platoon system that built the modern game
It wasn’t always this way. For decades players went “both ways,” staying on for offense and defense alike. The two-platoon system — separate offensive and defensive squads — transformed the sport in the mid-20th century, and is the reason football became a game of specialists. Today that specialisation reaches almost absurd extremes: the long snapper is a roster spot devoted to a player whose entire job is snapping the ball backwards on kicks, a few times a game.
