How many players are on a football (soccer) team?

Eleven a side, including the goalkeeper — a number that hasn’t budged in over 150 years. What does change, constantly, is how those eleven are arranged. The formation is the whole game.

Eleven dots, infinite shapes

The number is fixed — the formation isn’t

Always eleven (one keeper + ten outfield). Switch the shape and watch them rearrange.

GK
4-3-3: Modern default — a midfield three and three forwards for high pressing and width.

Eleven, including the one who can use their hands

Each team has eleven players on the pitch: ten outfielders and one goalkeeper, the only player allowed to handle the ball (and only inside their own penalty area). If injuries or red cards drop a team below seven, the match is abandoned — so eleven is the start, but seven is the cliff-edge.

The number is frozen; the shape is everything

Because the count is fixed, the entire art of football is in arranging those eleven. A 4-4-2 sets two flat banks of four behind a strike pair; a 4-3-3 trades a striker for a midfielder to press and stretch the pitch; a 3-5-2 sacrifices a defender to flood the middle. Same eleven dots, completely different game — which is exactly what the switcher above lets you feel.

Why eleven — and the five-sub revolution

The eleven-a-side standard dates to football’s codification in the 1860s, after the Football Association formed in 1863; the number echoes the size of a cricket eleven, the dominant team sport among the English schools that shaped the rules. For substitutes, the change is recent: after a pandemic-era trial, football’s lawmakers (the IFAB) made five substitutes permanent in the Laws of the Game from July 2022, up from three — and even raised World Cup squads to 26.
