The myth this number quietly kills

For decades a striking claim circulated in classrooms and pub conversations alike: that there are more people alive today than have ever died in all of history. It feels plausible — the modern population explosion is real and enormous. It is also flatly wrong, and the 117-billion figure is exactly what proves it.

Do the arithmetic. If about 117 billion people have ever been born and roughly 8.2 billion are alive now, then around 109 billion have died. The dead outnumber the living by something close to 13 to 1. Far from the living being a majority, they have never been more than about 7% of every human who has ever existed — and for almost all of the past, that share sat below 2%.

The Population Reference Bureau, the demographic research organisation behind the most-cited estimate, has had to debunk the "more alive than dead" claim repeatedly. The truth is the opposite, and it is more interesting: you are part of the largest single generation of humans ever — and also part of a tiny, recent minority of everyone who has ever drawn breath.

Why it is only an estimate

No one has ever counted the dead, and no one ever could. The 117-billion figure is a careful reconstruction, and four things keep it from being exact.

There was no census for most of history. Reliable national headcounts are barely two centuries old. Everything before that is inferred from archaeology, agriculture, settlement sizes and tax records — useful, but never a true tally.

Prehistoric populations are genuinely uncertain. Estimates of how many humans were alive in, say, 30,000 BCE range across an order of magnitude. Because the early eras span tens of thousands of years, even small differences in those guesses change the running total by billions.

Birth rates varied enormously. The calculation depends on assumed births per thousand people per year, and that figure swung between roughly 80 in the deep past and around 30 or fewer today. Pick slightly different rates and the answer shifts.

"Modern human" has no hard start line. Do you begin counting 50,000 years ago, 190,000, or further back? The Population Reference Bureau's 2022 update used about 190,000 BCE. Move the starting line and you add or remove a slab of early, high-mortality history.

Do Neanderthals and earlier humans count?

The 117 billion counts only anatomically modern Homo sapiens — us. It draws a line at the emergence of our own species and leaves everyone before it out. That line is genuinely blurry. Fossils found at Jebel Irhoud in Morocco, redated in 2017, pushed the earliest known modern humans back to around 300,000 years ago, well beyond the 190,000-year start the Population Reference Bureau used. Choose the older date and you tack on another hundred millennia of small, high-mortality populations — and several billion more births.

Step further back and the question stops making sense. Neanderthals, Homo erectus and the other hominins who walked the Earth for nearly two million years are not counted, because they were not us — though Neanderthals interbred with our ancestors, leaving traces in many living genomes today. Include them and "how many people have ever lived" becomes "how many members of the human family tree have ever lived," a far larger and far fuzzier number. The 117 billion is best understood as the count of us, specifically — which is exactly why the starting date matters so much.

How demographers actually count the dead

The method behind the headline number is surprisingly simple in outline, and it is worth understanding, because it explains why the total is "only" 117 billion despite our species being around 200,000 years old.

Demographers — the approach was pioneered by Nathan Keyfitz and refined by Carl Haub and Toshiko Kaneda at the Population Reference Bureau — pick a starting date and a starting population. They then divide all of history into chunks, assign each chunk a plausible average birth rate, multiply that rate by the population alive during the chunk, and add up the births. Sum every chunk from prehistory to now and you get the cumulative number of humans ever born.

The crucial, counter-intuitive insight is about child mortality. For nearly all of history, a huge share of those births did not survive to adulthood — in some eras, close to half of all children died young. That means the running total of births is far larger than the population ever alive at once, but it also means the total grew slowly, because tiny populations, even with high birth rates, simply cannot generate many people per century. The explosive growth is recent; the long tail of history is enormous in time but modest in numbers.

Why the answer keeps changing

If you looked this up a decade ago, you would have found a different headline: about 108 billion. The Population Reference Bureau's 2011 edition, by Carl Haub, settled on roughly that figure. The 2022 update, by Toshiko Kaneda and Haub, raised it to about 117 billion. Nine billion extra humans did not suddenly turn up — the model changed.

The biggest single revision was the starting line. Earlier editions began the count around 50,000 BCE; the 2022 version pushed it back to roughly 190,000 BCE, in line with current thinking on when modern humans appeared. Tens of thousands of extra years of small but real populations, each with very high birth rates, add billions of births to the running total. Tweaks to the assumed prehistoric population and birth rates did the rest. This is the honest texture of the number: it is a carefully reasoned estimate that moves when the evidence and the assumptions move, not a fact carved in stone. Anyone quoting it to the last digit has missed the point.

The pattern is acceleration, then reversal. The second billion took 123 years; by the late 20th century each new billion arrived in barely a dozen. But the gaps have stopped shrinking — the jump from 7 to 8 billion took slightly longer than the one before it, and the ninth billion is projected to take far longer still, perhaps not arriving until the late 2030s. Global birth rates are falling, and for the first time in modern history demographers seriously discuss when the human population will peak and begin to decline.

Where the number goes next

For the first time, the long climb may be nearing its top. The United Nations' 2024 projections suggest the living population will peak at around 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s and then begin a slow decline, as falling birth rates finally outweigh longer lives. That is a genuine turning point: most people reading this will live to see the global population stop growing.

But the 117 billion behaves differently from the living population, and the distinction is the whole trick of this page. The cumulative count of everyone ever born is a one-way ratchet — it can only ever go up, because the dead are never subtracted. Even if the world population shrinks after the 2080s, births will keep happening, and the all-time total will keep ticking upward, likely passing 125 billion well before 2100.

So expect the famous "7%" to start drifting back down. As the living population plateaus while the all-time total keeps rising, the share of all humans who are alive at once will slip below seven percent again — and the era we are living through, when so unusually large a fraction of everyone ever born is here at the same time, will turn out to have been a brief and remarkable peak.
