The short answer

But pages are the wrong yardstick here. Why the page count jumps around
A page isn’t a fixed unit — it’s whatever a publisher fits between the covers. Three things move the count, none of which touch a word Woolf wrote:
- Type size and spacing. A generously set edition can add forty pages without adding text.
- Page dimensions. A pocket paperback fits less per page than a larger trade format, so it needs more pages.
- Introductions and notes. Scholarly editions add an introduction, a chronology and explanatory notes — useful for study, and worth twenty or thirty pages.
So if two classmates quote different numbers, both are right. They are holding different printings of the same 63,400 words.
Why a short book reads slowly
Here is the trap. Students see a 170-page novel, assume a quick weekend, and then stall on page thirty. Mrs Dalloway is short but dense, for two reasons. First, the stream of consciousness: Woolf slides between characters’ thoughts without announcing the switch, so a single paragraph can pass through three minds. You have to read attentively to track whose thought you are inside. Second, there are no chapters — the novel runs as one continuous day, broken only by small spaces on the page. There is no natural “I’ll stop at the end of the chapter,” so it resists being read in snatches.
The fix is to read it the way it is built: in longer sittings, ideally a few large chunks rather than many small ones, letting the current of thought carry you. Budget more time than the four-hour raw figure — six to eight hours of genuine attention is realistic for a first read — and the difficulty turns into the pleasure. The slowness is the book working on you, not against you.
Which edition to buy for the HSC
For NSW HSC students, page count is irrelevant — supporting material is everything. Buy an edition with a strong introduction and explanatory notes: the Oxford World’s Classics and Penguin Modern Classics editions are both excellent for this, unpacking Woolf’s allusions and the post-war context you will need for analysis. Because Mrs Dalloway entered the public domain in 2021, there are also many cheap and free editions, but a bare-text printing leaves you doing all the contextual work yourself.
Whatever you choose, own a physical copy you can annotate. You will be tracking motifs — Big Ben, flowers, the “leaden circles” of sound — and quoting short passages with page references across the single day; a markable book beats a screen for that.
