How Many Minutes in a Day?
1,440 minutes in a standard 24-hour day. 86,400 seconds. That's the clean answer. The slightly stranger answer is that a real day isn't always 24 hours long — Earth's actual rotation takes 23 h 56 m 4 s, and the apparent solar day swings by ±16 minutes through the year.

Common chunk reference
The most-asked chunk sizes pre-calculated for a 24-hour day, a 60-minute hour, and a standard 8-hour work day.
The 25-min row is the Pomodoro Technique's work interval; pair it with 5-minute breaks and you can fit 24 full Pomodoros into a 12-hour span. The 90-minute row matches the natural human ultradian work rhythm — research suggests focused output peaks in ~90 min bursts.
The numbers behind a day
The simple math, and the historical reason
24 hours × 60 minutes = 1,440. The same day contains 86,400 seconds (1,440 × 60), about 86.4 million milliseconds, and roughly 86.4 billion microseconds. The arithmetic is the same in every modern timekeeping system from Greenwich to Tokyo.
The 60-minute hour and the 60-second minute come from ancient Sumerian and Babylonian astronomy. Their base-60 (sexagesimal) number system used 60 as a base because it has unusually many divisors — 60 can be split evenly into 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20 and 30 parts. That's why your watch face works cleanly for quarter past, twenty to, half past, and so on; the same number divides cleanly four different ways. Base-10 minutes (which various reformers have proposed since the French Revolution) would lose all of that.
The 24-hour day is similarly old. Ancient Egyptian astronomers split the daylight into 12 hours (one per decan star) and the night into 12 more. The two sets had wildly different lengths through the year, which is why "equal hours" only came in with mechanical clocks in the 14th century. We've been on 24 equal hours ever since.
Solar day vs sidereal day — the 4-minute gap
24h 0m 0s
The interval between two successive noons — when the Sun returns to the same overhead position. This is the basis of clock time and what we casually call "a day".
23h 56m 4s
The Earth's actual rotation period — how long it takes for the planet to spin once relative to the distant stars. Astronomers use this; the rest of us use the solar version.
Why the four-minute gap? Because Earth doesn't just spin — it also moves around the Sun. By the time the planet completes one full rotation (the sidereal day), it has also moved about 1/365th of the way around its orbit. So the Sun's apparent position has shifted slightly, and we have to rotate ~4 extra minutes to point the same spot back at it.
Over a full year, those daily 4-minute differences add up to exactly one extra full rotation. Earth completes 366.25 sidereal rotations per year but only 365.25 solar days. That's why a year of 365 solar days contains 366 sidereal days — the maths is exactly right.
The Equation of Time — your watch is lying
The true solar day varies by ±16 minutes across the year. A sundial and a wristwatch only agree four times per year.
Approximate monthly midpoints of the equation of time. Above zero = sundial ahead of clock; below zero = sundial behind. The curve only crosses zero four times a year (mid-April, mid-June, early September, late December). The combined effect of Earth's elliptical orbit and 23.5° axial tilt produces the figure-8 "analemma" pattern.
Two effects combine to produce the curve. The first is Earth's elliptical orbit: when we're closer to the Sun (around early January) we move faster, so the Sun appears to drift slightly behind clock time. The second is the 23.5° tilt of Earth's axis: the projection of the Sun's apparent motion onto the celestial equator isn't uniform, so the rate at which a sundial gains or loses changes throughout the year.
Add the two effects and you get the figure-8 pattern visible on better-quality sundials and on the so-called "analemma" — the shape the Sun traces if you photograph it at the same clock time every day for a year. The peak deviation reaches +16 minutes in early November and -14 minutes in early February. Mariners and astronomers have used equation-of-time tables for centuries; modern smartphones quietly correct for it without telling you.
A day in popular video games
Most games compress 24 in-game hours into 10-30 real minutes. A few don't compress at all.
Game-day length is a design choice. Faster cycles (Minecraft 20 min) force constant decisions about light and shelter. Slower cycles (Skyrim 72 min) make day/night transitions feel like full chapters. Real-time cycles (Animal Crossing) anchor the game in your actual life — open it Tuesday morning and Tuesday morning is what's happening in the village too.
Your Productive Day Calculator
From 1,440 minutes of clock time to actual focused work. Most people are surprised by how few minutes survive sleep, meetings and the inbox.
Research on knowledge workers consistently finds that ~3 hours of genuinely focused work per day is typical, even for people who feel "busy all day". The other minutes evaporate into context-switching and shallow tasks.

How many minutes are in a standard 24-hour day?
Frequently Asked Questions
How many minutes in a day exactly?
Exactly 1,440 minutes in the conventional 24-hour day used by every clock and calendar in the modern world. That's also exactly 86,400 seconds. The "exactly" is true for clock time; the underlying astronomical day varies, but that's not what your watch is measuring.
How many 5-minute chunks in a day?
288. The math: 1,440 ÷ 5 = 288. Useful framing if you're doing the kind of time-blocking where every action gets a slot. The other common chunk sizes: 10-min → 144 chunks/day, 15-min → 96 chunks/day, 20-min → 72 chunks/day, 30-min → 48 chunks/day.
How many minutes in an 8-hour work day?
480 minutes. Subtract an unpaid hour for lunch (US standard) and you're at 420 paid minutes. The honest figure for focused-work time is much lower — typically 180-240 productive minutes once meetings, email and context-switching are removed. The Productive Day Calculator above gives you the math for your own numbers.
How many minutes are in a Minecraft day?
20 real minutes for a complete day-night cycle. Breakdown: ~10 minutes of daylight, ~1.5 minutes of dusk, ~7 minutes of night, ~1.5 minutes of dawn. The 24,000-tick cycle (game ticks, not real seconds) is the basis for most farming, mob-spawning and crop-growth timers in the game.
Are there ever days that aren't 1,440 minutes long?
Yes — three cases. (1) Daylight Saving Time transition days: spring-forward day has 1,380 minutes (23 hours), fall-back day has 1,500 (25 hours). (2) Astronomical "true" solar days vary by ±16 min through the year (equation of time). (3) Leap seconds — occasionally an extra second is added to the last minute of June 30 or December 31, making one day 1,440 minutes and 1 second long. The last leap second was December 2016; the system is being phased out by 2035.
How many minutes in a trading day?
For the US (NYSE/NASDAQ), 390 minutes of regular session — 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM Eastern. London is 510 min (8.5 hours), Tokyo 300 min (with lunch break), ASX 360 min. See the trading hours table above for the major exchanges.
