How Many Kilograms in a Pound
One pound is 0.45359237 kilograms. Not "about 0.45" — exactly that, to the last digit. It is one of the strangest-looking numbers in everyday measurement, and the reason it looks engineered is that it was. Since 1959 the pound has had no independent existence of its own: it is legally defined as a fixed slice of the kilogram. The imperial system, the one that supposedly rivals the metric system, quietly runs on metric foundations.
Going the other way, one kilogram is about 2.2046 pounds. For quick sums most people round that to 2.2 — useful, but not free of cost, as the second tool below shows. The converter handles pounds, kilograms and stone together, because in real life people rarely stay in one system for long.

The pound is defined by the kilogram
Before 1959, the United States and the United Kingdom each maintained their own pound, and the two differed by a hair — enough to matter in science and trade. The international yard and pound agreement of 1959, signed by the US, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, ended that. It fixed one avoirdupois pound at exactly 0.45359237 kilograms for all of them.
Note the direction of that definition. The pound was not used to define anything; it was defined in terms of the kilogram. The number 0.45359237 was reverse-engineered to match the physical pounds already in use as closely as possible, then frozen. From that day, the imperial pound has been a metric unit wearing imperial clothes.
What the pound is ultimately made of
Follow the chain down and it gets stranger. For most of the 20th century the kilogram itself was a physical object: a cylinder of platinum-iridium kept in a vault near Paris, known as the International Prototype of the Kilogram. Every pound on Earth traced back, through that 1959 ratio, to one lump of metal in France.
In 2019 that changed. The kilogram was redefined in terms of the Planck constant — a fundamental constant of quantum physics — so it no longer depends on any object that could be scratched, breathed on or lost. Because the pound is still 0.45359237 of a kilogram, the pound inherited that new definition. The unit you use to weigh apples is now anchored, at the bottom of the chain, to a constant of nature.

A few ounces light — you will never notice it on body weight.
The reverse shortcut is far worse. Halving pounds to "get kilograms" treats a pound as 0.5 kg when it is really 0.4536 — a 10% error. 100 lb is 45.4 kg, not 50.
Three systems, one bathroom
The United Kingdom is the clearest example of measurement living in three layers at once. People give their body weight in stone — one stone is 14 pounds, or 6.35 kilograms. Hospitals record that same weight in kilograms. Gyms label their plates in kilograms, while a lot of imported equipment is still marked in pounds. One person, one body, three numbers, depending on who is asking.
The stone has its own oddity: 14 was never obvious. Before standardisation, a "stone" meant different weights for different goods — wool, meat and glass were each weighed against their own stone, ranging from 8 to 24 pounds. The 14-pound stone is simply the one that survived for weighing people. Newborns inherit the same split: a baby announced as "7 pounds 8 ounces" is logged by the hospital as 3.4 kilograms.
Mass is not weight — and the pound blurs the line
A kilogram measures mass — how much matter is present. The pound, in careful usage, also measures mass, but in everyday speech "pounds" usually means weight: the downward force gravity exerts on that mass. On Earth the two track each other so reliably that nobody notices the difference. Off Earth they part company.
Take a person to the Moon and their mass in kilograms does not change at all — the matter is still there. Their "weight in pounds", if measured by a spring scale, would drop to roughly one-sixth, because the Moon pulls more weakly. This is why engineers separate the pound-mass from the pound-force, and why your bathroom scale, which actually senses force, has to assume Earth-normal gravity to show you a number in pounds.
