How Many Hobbs & Shaw Films Are There?

1There is exactly one Hobbs & Shaw film — the 2019 spin-off. The real puzzle is why a $760 million hit never got a second one.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019) is the only film in the series. Directed by David Leitch, it pulled lawman Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and outlaw Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) out of the main Fast & Furious films into their own buddy-action movie, teaming them with Shaw’s sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) against a cybernetically enhanced villain played by Idris Elba. It was the franchise’s first spin-off and its ninth film overall, and it made $760.7 million worldwide. A sequel was announced almost immediately — and then never happened.

Why is there only one Hobbs & Shaw film?

On paper a sequel was a sure thing: a $760 million gross, a 67% Rotten Tomatoes score, an A-minus CinemaScore, and a sequel announced within months. Six years later it still does not exist. Three things killed the momentum.

1. The box office cooled the studio
$760 million sounds enormous, but it was the first Fast film since 2015 not to cross $1 billion. The two films right before it took $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion. Hobbs & Shaw landed just as the whole franchise’s grosses began sliding, so Universal grew cautious about funding another $200 million-plus spin-off.
2. The stars’ calendars never lined up
Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are two of the busiest actors working, and producers openly blamed scheduling — Johnson in particular — for the hold-up. Rather than wait, the studio folded both back into the main saga instead: Statham appeared in Fast X, with Johnson returning via its end-credits scene and the final films.
3. The script was never written
Writer Chris Morgan was attached early, but a screenplay never materialised. By February 2023, producers confirmed the sequel had no plans to move forward. Without a script and without an opening in the leads’ diaries, the project quietly stalled.

So the honest answer is one film — and, as of 2026, no second one in active development.

Where it sits in the Fast & Furious saga

Hobbs & Shaw is a standalone story set after The Fate of the Furious (2017) and before F9 (2021). You can skip it entirely and still follow the main films — it exists off to the side, which is part of why its absence of a sequel barely dented the franchise. Both characters simply rejoined the core series, and Fast X even teased a different Hobbs spin-off in its mid-credits scene, leaving the original Hobbs & Shaw thread unfinished.

If you are counting the wider series instead, that is a separate question — see how many Fast & Furious films there are, which tracks the ten main-saga entries this spin-off branched off from.
