How Many Days Until Christmas?

Christmas Day never moves — it's 25 December, every year. What moves is what the number means: to a child it's a count of sleeps, to a shopper it's how many Saturdays are left, and to anyone budgeting it's how many paydays remain. The countdown below shows all of them.

The posting deadlines hiding inside the countdown

The countdown people actually need in December isn't to the 25th — it's to the last day they can post a parcel and still have it arrive in time. Those cut-offs are published fresh every year by each postal service and shift with the calendar, so treat these as the rough shape, not gospel: international economy post usually closes first, often in late November; international express and domestic parcels run later, into the third week of December; and express domestic options can stretch to within a few days of Christmas. Check your own carrier's stated dates for the year before you rely on them — Australia Post, Royal Mail and USPS each put theirs out by mid-November. The "Saturdays left to shop" figure above is the useful companion to this: it counts the shopping weekends you actually have, not the calendar days you can't use.

Same countdown, opposite season

"How many days until Christmas in Australia?" is one of the most-asked versions of this question, and the number is identical — a date doesn't change with latitude. What changes is everything around it. In the southern hemisphere Christmas lands in the middle of summer, so the seafood lunch, the beach and the cricket replace snow and open fires. Time zones add a second twist: because the day begins in the east, Australia and New Zealand reach Christmas morning several hours before Europe, and most of a full day before the west coast of the United States. The timer on this page sidesteps all of that by reading your own device clock, so it hits zero at your midnight, wherever you are.

Why some people count to a different day entirely

Not everyone is counting to 25 December. Many Orthodox Christians — including most of the Russian, Serbian and Georgian churches — still fix Christmas by the older Julian calendar, which now runs 13 days behind the Gregorian one. Their Christmas therefore falls on what the rest of the world calls 7 January. The countdown habit itself is younger than you might think: the Advent calendar, the device that turned waiting for Christmas into a daily ritual, was a German invention of the 19th century, with the first printed ones appearing in the early 1900s.

Frequently asked questions

How many sleeps until Christmas?

The "sleeps" figure in the panel above is the live answer — it counts whole nights between tonight and Christmas morning, which is why on 24 December it reads "1 sleep".

Does the countdown use my timezone?

Yes. It reads your device's local clock, so it reaches zero at midnight on 25 December where you are — not in some other time zone.

How many days until Christmas in Australia?

The same number as anywhere else — a date is a date. The difference is the season: Australia reaches Christmas in midsummer, and because of time zones it gets there several hours before Europe or the Americas.

What day is Christmas Eve?

24 December, the day before Christmas Day. It is the focus of celebrations in much of Europe and Latin America, where the main meal often happens on the evening of the 24th.

What happens to the countdown after 25 December?

It rolls straight on to next year. Once Christmas Day passes in your time zone, the timer re-targets 25 December of the following year automatically. You can also jump to any future year with the picker.
