Why 100 cm → 10,000 cm² → 1,000,000 cm³. It's the most counterintuitive thing about the metric system, and the reason fish-tank arithmetic goes wrong so often.
Most people guess 100 for all three conversions. Only the linear one is right. Here's why area and volume jump so dramatically:

This is why a "small" cubic metre actually holds 1,000 litres of water (1 mL = 1 cm³). It's also why a 10 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm box is 1 litre exactly — the metric system is internally consistent in a way imperial never was.
The numbers behind the metre
Why 100 — and why the system is so consistent
The number 100 is built into the word itself. The prefix centi- comes from the Latin centum, meaning one hundred — the same root behind "cent," "century," and "percentage." A centimetre is, by direct definition, one hundredth of a metre. There's no measurement involved; it's just what the word means.
That's the philosophical hook of the entire metric system. Every prefix is a power of ten: kilo- is 1,000, hecto- is 100, deca- is 10, deci- is 0.1, milli- is 0.001, and so on. Converting between any two metric units is just shifting a decimal point. There are no awkward "5,280 feet in a mile" moments lurking inside.
The consistency extends across the whole system: a cubic metre of water weighs exactly 1,000 kilograms (a tonne), a cubic centimetre of water is exactly 1 millilitre and weighs 1 gram, and 1 kilocalorie raises a kilogram of water by exactly 1°C. None of that is coincidence — it was all designed into the system by the French Academy of Sciences in the 1790s.

The ladder continues both directions: mega- (10⁶, megametres = continental scale), giga- (10⁹, Earth-Moon distance), tera- (10¹², Solar System scale). And smaller: pico- (10⁻¹², atom diameter), femto- (10⁻¹⁵, atomic nucleus). Modern SI was extended in 2022 to add ronna/quetta (10²⁷, 10³⁰) and ronto/quecto (10⁻²⁷, 10⁻³⁰) for cosmology and quantum physics.

How the metre has been defined
The definition has changed four times since 1791, each time getting more precise and less Earth-dependent.

Set by the French Academy of Sciences. Surveying took until 1799; the actual measurement was slightly off, but the definition stood for nearly a century.

Every metre on Earth now traces back to a fundamental constant of the universe. The whole 1889 platinum-iridium bar in Paris is still preserved — but it's a museum piece, no longer the standard.

Exactly 100. The prefix "centi-" means one-hundredth by definition (from Latin centum = 100). There's no measurement involved — it's a definitional relationship. To convert metres to centimetres, multiply by 100; for cm to m, divide by 100.
How many centimetres in a square metre?
This is a phrasing trap. There is no straight "cm in a m²" answer because they measure different things (length vs area). What you probably want is square centimetres in a square metre, which is 10,000 (because 100 cm × 100 cm = 10,000 cm²).
How many cubic centimetres in a cubic metre?
1,000,000 (one million). 100 cm × 100 cm × 100 cm = 100³ = 1,000,000 cm³. Useful to know: 1 cm³ = 1 mL, so 1 m³ = 1,000 litres. This is why a "small" cubic metre of water is heavier than a person — it weighs 1,000 kg.
How many centimetres in half a metre?
50. Half a metre = 0.5 × 100 = 50 cm. That's about the length of a newborn baby, the height of a standard kitchen sink, or the depth of a typical bathroom vanity.
How does this compare to inches and feet?
1 metre ≈ 39.37 inches ≈ 3.281 feet. 1 centimetre ≈ 0.394 inches. The exact factor: 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly (defined in 1959). So 100 cm = 100 / 2.54 ≈ 39.37 inches.
Why use centimetres instead of metres?
For sub-metre precision without fractions or decimals. "1.75 m" is technically equivalent to "175 cm," but the second one avoids the decimal — cleaner on rulers, in clothing sizes, on prescription forms. Many engineering disciplines avoid the centimetre and go straight from metres to millimetres (this is the SI-recommended approach for technical work).
