How many cards are in a UNO deck?
A classic UNO deck has 108 cards — 76 number cards, 24 action cards and 8 Wilds. But pull the shrink-wrap off a box in a shop today and you’ll count 112. Both answers are right; they’re just answering different questions.

The 108, taken apart
The classic deck breaks cleanly into three families. There are 76 number cards, 24 action cards (Skip, Reverse and Draw Two), and 8 Wild cards(four plain Wilds and four Wild Draw Fours). Add them up and you land on 108.
Colour does most of the work. UNO has four suits — red, yellow, green and blue — and each one holds exactly 25 cards: 19 number cards plus two each of Skip, Reverse and Draw Two. Four colours × 25 = 100 colour cards, and the 8 colourless Wilds make up the rest.
The one detail almost everyone gets wrong is the zero. Each colour has a single 0 but two of every number from 1 to 9. That lone, un-duplicated zero is the small asymmetry that makes the count feel “off” when you try to split a deck evenly.
Why the box says 112
For decades the answer was simply 108. Then Mattel started shipping four extra Wild cards in the standard retail box, and the number on the back of the pack quietly became 112. The game’s own Wikipedia infobox now lists 112 as the card count.
The four newcomers are all Wilds: one Wild Swap Hands card, which lets you trade your entire hand with another player, and three Wild Customizable cards — erasable blanks you write your own rule onto before the round. Mattel’s official product listing for the current deck spells it out: 4 Wilds, 4 Wild Draw Fours, 1 Wild Swap Hands and 3 Wild Customizable cards.
Nothing about the classic 108 changed — the four extras simply sit on top. Pull them out and you’re back to the deck your grandparents played with. That’s exactly what the toggler above does.
The house-rule trap
The composition matters most when a table’s “everyone knows” rules collide with the printed ones. The biggest one: stacking. Most people grew up dropping a Draw Two on a Draw Two so the penalty piles onto the next player. Mattel has stated outright that this isn’t in the official rules — stacking draw cards is a house rule, not the real game.
The zero quirk bites here too. Because each colour has only one 0, a deck of 108 doesn’t divide into tidy, identical colour stacks by number — handy to know if your house variant deals cards out by colour or number rather than at random.

Where the deck came from
UNO was invented in 1971 by Merle Robbins, a barber in Reading, Ohio, to settle a running argument with his son Ray over the rules of Crazy Eights. The family raised about $8,000, printed the first 5,000 decks on their dining-room table, and sold them out of the barbershop.
In 1972 Robbins sold the rights to a group led by Robert Tezak, an Illinois funeral-parlor owner, for $50,000 plus a 10¢-per-game royalty. Tezak formed International Games Inc. to market it, and on January 23, 1992 Mattel acquired the company — the owner under which the deck grew its modern 112-card shape.
