The short answer
Quality panels last 30–40+ years in practice, comfortably beyond their 25-year performance warranty. NREL field data puts median degradation at about 0.5% per year for crystalline silicon, leaving panels at roughly 88% of original output at year 25 and declining only slowly after. They fade, they don't die
The mental model most people have — works perfectly, then dies at 25 — is wrong. Panels lose a little output every year, a process called degradation, the way a phone battery slowly holds less charge. There's a small first-year settle of 1–3% (light-induced degradation), then a steady creep of about 0.3–0.5% a year for tier-1 panels — as low as 0.25% for premium modules from REC or Maxeon, but 0.8–1.0% for budget tier-3 ones, which is the real difference quality buys you over a lifetime.
What ages a panel fastest isn't sunlight, it's heat — which is why a panel's temperature coefficient matters more than total sun exposure, and a module rated at −0.24%/°C survives hot summers better than one at −0.35%/°C. True early failures are rare and come from damage or defects — hail, microcracks, moisture ingress, delamination — not from age. Left alone on a decent roof, a panel just quietly produces a little less each year, essentially forever.
The two warranties
The confusion around "25 years" comes from there being two separate warranties. The product (or workmanship) warranty covers manufacturing defects — delamination, frame corrosion, outright failure — and runs 10–25 years; a tier-1 maker offers 15–25, and a 10-year product warranty is a red flag. The performance (or power) warranty is the famous one: it guarantees a minimum output over time, typically 97–98% in year one and at least 80–84% at year 25. That guaranteed floor is what "lasts 25 years" actually means — not the moment the panel stops.
One caveat worth its own sentence: a warranty is only as good as the company behind it. Maxeon offers a remarkable 40-year warranty, but financial concerns were flagged in 2025 — and a smaller brand that goes out of business can't honour a 25-year promise. Buy the performance number, but buy it from a manufacturer likely to still exist in 2050.
The inverter is the weak link
Here's the part the panel datasheet never tells you: the panels will almost certainly outlast everything attached to them. The inverter is the component that actually wears out. A string inverter lasts 10–15 years, so it needs one or two replacements over a panel's life (roughly $1,500–3,000 a time — budget for one around year 13). Microinverters and optimizers last 15–25 years with matching warranties, often going the full distance without a swap. Over a 40-year span, plan for two to three inverter replacements either way.
The other thing that can age out before the panels is the roof beneath them — an asphalt-shingle roof lasts 20–30 years, so if it's near end of life when you install, it's worth re-roofing first to avoid removing and refitting the array later. End of life & recycling
Because panels fade rather than fail, "end of life" is usually an economic decision, not a breakdown.
