Most "hard" trivia is just obscure — a question about something you were never going to know. These 199 are hard a different way. Every one takes a fact you almost certainly already have and asks the question that sits one rung above it. You know a chessboard has 64 squares. What actually makes a trivia question hard
There are two ways to build a difficult question, and only one of them is any fun. The first is to reach for something nobody knows — the middle name of a 1930s county cricketer, the third-largest export of Turkmenistan. Nobody gets it, nobody learns anything, and the room goes quiet. That is obscurity, not difficulty.
The second is to take a fact almost everybody in the room already holds and ask the next question along. A chessboard has 64 squares: everyone knows that. Count every square of every size and the answer is 204, which is the sum of the first eight square numbers. Both questions are about the same object. One is a warm-up; the other has a genuine chance of splitting a table of clever people down the middle.
That second kind is what this set is made of. It is also why the wrong answers matter as much as the right one. When you miss, the page tells you which specific trap caught you — not just the correct answer, but why the answer you chose was built to look right.
The four traps used throughout
Every distractor here is deliberate. Four patterns do nearly all the work, and once you can name them you will start seeing them in every pub quiz you ever play.
How the 199 were built
howmany.pro answers several hundred plain factual questions — how many bones in the body, how many keys on a piano, how many time zones in the world. Each of those pages is the easy rung. The 199 questions here were written by taking 196 of those pages and asking, in each case, what the second question would be.
So the piano page says 88 keys. The hard question asks how many of those 88 are black — 36, not the round 30 or 40 people reach for. The time zone page says 24. The hard question asks how many distinct UTC offsets are actually in use, which is 38, because Nepal sits at UTC+5:45 and the Chatham Islands at +12:45.
Deliberately, almost none of the 199 is phrased as a "how many" question. They are which-of-these, what-caused, why-does, odd-one-out, complete-the-claim. A quiz built entirely out of one sentence shape becomes rhythmic and easy to game — you start guessing from the shape of the options rather than the content.
Running this as a quiz night

A warning worth taking seriously: this set is calibrated hard. A room of reasonably well-read adults will average somewhere in the 40–60% range on a mixed round, and that is the intended result. If you are running it for a general crowd, mix in easier rounds from a normal pack, or stay inside one subject so at least the specialists at each table get a run.
Survival mode is the tiebreaker. Three wrong and you are out, questions keep coming, and the longest streak wins. It settles a two-team deadlock in about four minutes.

Has trivia got easier, or have we just got faster at looking things up?
The pub quiz survived the smartphone by changing what it rewards. When any fact is four seconds away, recall stops being scarce and the currency shifts to speed, teamwork and nerve. Quiz shows moved the same way: the modern format leans on time pressure and risk — bank or continue, wager or hold — far more than on knowing an obscure capital city.
That has quietly made the classic factual question harder to write well. A question is now only good if the interesting part survives being looked up. "How many squares on a chessboard" does not survive. "How many squares of every size" does, because the interesting part is not the number — it is realising the question you thought you were answering was the wrong one.
That is the whole design brief for this set, and it is why every question here points back at the plain, easy version of the same fact. The easy answer is not the enemy of a hard question. It is the ledge you have to be standing on before the drop means anything.
