🪕 About the 5th string
String 5 is the SHORT, HIGH drone string attached at the 5th fret of the neck. In standard Open G it tunes to g4 (about 392 Hz) — HIGHER than string 1 (D4 at 294 Hz). When you tune by ear or with this tuner, do NOT tune the 5th string to the same pitch as the first string. The drone sitting above the rest of the strings is a defining banjo characteristic.

How to use this tuner
1. Pick your tuning. Open G is the default — bluegrass, Earl Scruggs-style, the modern standard. The other three (Double C, G modal, Open D) are old-time clawhammer scordaturas tied to specific tune families.
2. Enable your microphone. Audio is processed locally; nothing is uploaded.
3. Pluck one string firmly. The display shows the detected note (e.g., "G3"), the actual frequency in Hz, and the cents-offset from the target. The needle moves to the position on the meter; green ±5 cents is in tune.
4. The reading holds steady on the body of the note. As your plucked string decays, a median filter and a stable-pitch lock keep the held reading anchored to the body of the note rather than the noisy decay tail. Look up from the instrument after plucking; the held reading gives you time to read the result.
5. Adjust the tuning peg. The display tells you UP or DOWN. Banjos use friction pegs (not geared), so they're sensitive — small turns make big pitch changes. Pluck, check, adjust, repeat.
6. Tune string 5 last. Standard order is 4 → 3 → 2 → 1 → 5. The 5th-string peg is in the middle of the neck rather than at the scroll, which makes it the most awkward to reach. Getting the other four locked first means you don't have to keep going back to string 5 if the body shifts.
The 5th string — and how the banjo got here
The banjo's 5th string is unlike anything on any other widely-played Western instrument. It's short — about two-thirds the length of the other strings — and it's tuned HIGHER than its neighbours, with a peg planted in the middle of the neck at the 5th fret. The player doesn't fret it; they just pluck it open as a constant high drone underneath whatever melody is being played on the four long strings.
The historical lineage runs back through African instruments brought to America in the slave trade. The akonting (a 3-string gourd lute played by the Jola people of Senegal and Gambia) and the ngoni (a 4-string lute played across the Sahel) both have a short high-pitched drone string of exactly this character. African Americans in the early 19th-century American South developed the banjo — combining the gourd-bodied African construction with the European fretted fingerboard — and kept the drone configuration. By the 1830s the banjo was a fixture of American minstrel music and folk traditions, and the drone string was already standard.
Earl Scruggs codified the modern bluegrass banjo style in 1945, when he joined Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys. His three-finger roll technique works specifically because the open Open G tuning IS a G major chord — the fretting hand plays the melody and chord changes while the picking hand rolls patterns that include the high drone on every roll. No other tuning produces that signature bluegrass "rolling" sound; everyone who has played bluegrass banjo since has used Open G.
Why clawhammer players retune all the time
Bluegrass banjo lives in Open G. Almost every bluegrass tune ever recorded is played in that tuning, with capos used to shift the key up. Earl Scruggs's three-finger rolls are calibrated to Open G; retuning would mean relearning every roll pattern.
Old-time clawhammer is the opposite. The clawhammer banjoist often plays in Open G for major-key fiddle tunes, but switches to Double C (gCGCD) for old C-modal tunes like "Sandy Boys" or "Cumberland Gap," to G modal / Sawmill (gDGCD) for haunting minor-feeling tunes like "Shady Grove" or "Cluck Old Hen," and to Open D for D-major fiddle sets. Each tuning has its own repertoire of tunes that fit it; playing those tunes in the "wrong" tuning loses the open-string drones that give them their character.
A working clawhammer banjoist might retune two or three times during a single concert — between tune sets, while the band's fiddler takes a few seconds to drink water. The friction pegs on a banjo make this reasonably fast: experienced players retune in under thirty seconds without an electronic tuner. With a tuner, ten seconds. The four-tuning workflow is one of the genre-defining habits of old-time music.

Why your banjo drifts more than your guitar
A banjo has more independent moving parts than almost any other fretted instrument. The string tension pulls on the neck, the neck pulls on the dowel stick or rim, the rim is bolted to a calfskin or synthetic drum head that's stretched across the body and held in place by a tension ring with twenty or so brackets that can each be tightened independently. Every one of these components is sensitive to temperature and humidity, and every one of them can shift slightly between songs.
The result is that banjos drift out of tune faster than guitars, especially when you bring one in from a cold car or play one outdoors. Synthetic heads (Remo, Five Star) are more stable than the calfskin heads on traditional 19th-century-style instruments, but they still respond to temperature. Cold rooms tighten the head and raise the bridge pressure; warm rooms loosen it.
Practical implication: retune your banjo every five to ten minutes during the first half-hour of any playing session, especially if the room temperature is different from where the banjo was stored. After it acclimates to the room it'll hold steadier, but it'll never be as stable as a fully wooden instrument.
